The primary suite of the Hilltop Estate project is designed with a focus on creating a relaxing and warm atmosphere. The walls are painted in Swiss Coffee by Dunn Edwards, a color chosen for its warm white and creamy undertones, contributing to the serene ambiance of the space. A design challenge presented by an off-centered floor plan, which positioned the bed off-center relative to the light fixture, was addressed through an asymmetrical arrangement of bedside furniture. Instead of attempting to force symmetry with matching nightstands, the design incorporated a single nightstand on one side and a larger chest of drawers or a desk on the opposite side. To unify the differing heights of these pieces, a task light was placed on the taller side, its height aligned with a table lamp on the other side, effectively creating visual balance despite the asymmetry. The primary suite's bed is a central design element, featuring a custom canopy bed upholstered in a striped blue and cream fabric. The bedding combines various patterns and textures, utilizing soft linens and velvets. To introduce a contrasting visual element, vintage block print pillows in a bold reddish-orange hue were added, providing a 'punch' against the softer color palette of the bed and room. Kin House, an English countryside retreat, reimagines traditional design by blending historical elements with contemporary and playful touches, moving away from conventional chintz wallpaper and plaid sofas towards ornate wood paneling, uplifting paint colors, and leopard-print poufs. The designers, Lucy Sear-Barlow and Joshua Sear of Barlow & Barlow, faced the challenge of creating a versatile space that could serve as a wedding venue, wellness retreat, or private party location, requiring a design that was both a blank canvas and memorable. Their approach involved leveraging the Georgian manor's existing architecture while infusing their signature spirited style, aiming for a timeless feel that also offered Instagrammable moments crucial for an events space. One key design idea implemented was to embrace a consistent theme throughout the property. Inspired by a clam pediment above the front door, Sear-Barlow extended this nautical motif, starting with a shell grotto in a wall niche near the downstairs powder rooms. This harked back to British country house traditions of decorative shell structures. Artist Mel Campion was commissioned to embellish the niche, creating a unique photo opportunity. Further reinforcing the theme, a glass shell wall sconce and a custom-made clam-shaped sofa were incorporated, establishing distinct selfie stations within the venue. Another innovative concept was giving the bathtub a prominent stage. Recognizing the potential for cliché in placing a roll-top bath in a boutique bedroom, Sear-Barlow sought to elevate the idea. In rooms with large bay windows, tubs were placed on tiled platforms. The designer discovered a company that fabric-wraps bathtubs and selected an underwater-inspired print to harmonize with the ongoing nautical theme. This tiled ledge served multiple functions: preventing splashes, concealing pipework, defining the wash area, and raising the bather to enhance the view. A coordinating checkerboard rug was placed under the room’s four-poster bed to tie the look together. The designers also introduced shimmering surfaces to surprise guests and enhance the atmosphere. In the study, intended for intimate dinners rather than quiet contemplation, a high-gloss paint finish was used. This choice allowed candlelight to reflect off surfaces at night, creating a highly atmospheric and moody setting. The room's striking color palette, featuring duck's-egg blue on coffered ceilings and mustard-hued walls, contributed to a 'jewel box' effect, reminiscent of a luxurious drinking den. A New York family, after 14 years of renting a 19th-century cottage in Orleans on Cape Cod, decided to purchase the property when it went up for sale. They affectionately referred to their vacation spot as the "Magic Farm" due to its secluded acreage and the cherished memories formed there. Upon acquiring the property, the family, seeking a more spacious home for their extended family, engaged Polhemus Savery DaSilva Architects Builders from Chatham, with Senior Designer Sharon DaSilva leading the architectural design. They aimed for a larger home that wasn't overly grand, honoring the original cottage's history by blending iconic New England farmhouse architecture with shingle-style elements. The new 4,271-square-foot structure features a gracious entryway and wide hallways, ensuring a comfortable flow throughout the space. New York-based interior designer Kyle Timothy Blood was brought in as the project manager, tasked with creating an interior that felt both open for entertaining and cozy for family life, while keeping it unfussy. The design incorporated practical elements such as an informal wraparound porch with cedar-clad walls, easy-to-clean porcelain floors in high-traffic areas like the mudroom, bathrooms, and pool house, and durable outdoor fabrics for kitchen seating. Blood's interior palette was inspired by an Ocean Blue travertine slab used for the fireplace surround, which dictated the sophisticated earth tones used throughout the home. Lattice panels, hand-carved in Morocco in the mosharabi style, were incorporated into certain doors to provide light and privacy. The walls and floor of the master bath are adorned with zellige tile, intricate geometrical terra-cotta-and-enamel mosaics set into plaster. Bridging the aesthetic of the elaborate Moroccan bathroom with the coastal Cape Cod setting for the master bedroom presented a design challenge. Blood addressed this by integrating understated North African elements, such as medallion-patterned drapery, a geometric cowhide rug, an ikat-upholstered headboard, and nightstands with stamped metal fronts, into the space. The design team also paid homage to the original 19th-century rental cottage. Custom millwork above the new fireplace mantel echoes the original cottage's design. Additionally, a tower featuring a screened porch on the first floor and an upstairs sitting area was inspired by a distinctive lighthouse-shaped addition to the old cottage from the 1960s. The landscaping was intentionally kept simple to preserve the rural ambiance of the property, with planting beds strategically placed for privacy and grass extending directly to the front porch, surrounded by trees, including a century-old maple.
