Design Pros Reveal the Home Trend That Makes Rooms Feel "Anxious"

Fluting, a decorative element characterized by vertical grooves with historical roots in Greek and Roman architecture, has seen a rapid surge in popularity across various home design applications, from kitchen islands and cabinets to accent tables and bathroom vanities. While fluting has been widely adopted, particularly in new construction homes, design professionals are increasingly advocating for its decline, especially regarding fluted walls. The consensus among interior designers is that fluted walls have become overused and can create a sense of anxiety and unsettledness within a space. Furthermore, their widespread application across different materials and price points has led to a homogenization of home aesthetics, making many interiors appear indistinguishable. Beyond aesthetic concerns, practical disadvantages associated with fluted walls include maintenance challenges. Interior designer Robin Wilson highlights that walls represent the largest surface area in a home, and the deep crevices inherent in fluted designs significantly increase the surface area where dust and allergens can accumulate. This heightened dust collection can exacerbate asthma and allergic reactions and may even provide hiding spots for insects, adding to homeowners' cleaning burdens. The difficulty in keeping such textured surfaces clean makes them less practical for daily living. As fluting faces a decline in popularity, designers are exploring alternative textural elements to bring depth and character to interiors. One emerging trend involves the use of Roman Clay and/or limestone finishes, as well as grasscloth wallpapers and dimensional tiles. These options offer tactile experiences and visual interest that can be both felt and seen, providing a richer sensory dimension to walls without the drawbacks of fluting. Additionally, there is a growing movement towards more formal and elaborate wall treatments. Designers such as Sarah Storms observe a shift towards incorporating more intricate crown molding, taller baseboards, and comprehensive wall molding treatments. This trend is often combined with clean, slab cabinetry in luxurious wood grains like walnut, creating a sophisticated juxtaposition of old and new elements. This fusion aims to introduce warmth and depth into living spaces, drawing inspiration from classic architectural styles, such as Parisian apartments. Other traditional wall treatments like wainscoting, board and batten, and shiplap are also making a comeback, contributing to a more lived-in and charming aesthetic. These architectural details are being painted in rich, saturated colors such as deep greens, vibrant blues, and muddy pinks, further enhancing their visual impact and contributing to a distinctive home ambiance. #InteriorDesignTrends #FlutedWalls #HomeDecor #DesignPros #TexturalElements #WallTreatments #RomanClay #Molding #HomeMaintenance #InteriorDesignTrends #FlutedWalls #HomeDecor #DesignPros #TexturalElements #WallTreatments #RomanClay #Molding #HomeMaintenance
