Room We Love: A Stunning Bathroom Transformation in Huntersville
Dominique DeLaney, owner of Dominique DeLaney Interior Design, undertook a complete renovation of a new build in The Enclave community in Huntersville, focusing on creating a light, coastal-inspired interior for her clients, a family with two middle school-aged boys. The overall design for the house emphasized wire-brushed white oak flooring and incorporated various reclaimed wood elements, detailed ceiling designs, and extensive trim work. Despite the homeowners' preference for white interiors, a practical consideration arose due to the presence of two active boys, making an all-white aesthetic challenging to maintain. To introduce an element of surprise and contrast, DeLaney designed a striking, moody bathroom in the basement, deviating from the light and airy theme of the rest of the house.
The design of this basement bathroom began with the selection of 8-by-8-inch SOCI concrete hexagon floor tiles from Harkey Tile & Stone. These geometric tiles served as the foundational element, guiding subsequent design decisions. To achieve the desired moody ambiance, the shiplap walls were painted in Benjamin Moore's Cheating Heart, a deep, rich color. Complementing the dark walls, Vine & Branch Woodworks crafted a custom vanity with a weathered oak finish. This choice of wood was intentional, aiming to introduce warmth into the space, which otherwise featured cooler-toned concrete floors, thereby preventing the room from feeling overly sterile. Black hardware was integrated into the vanity design, providing a cohesive link with the dark tones of the flooring.
To counteract the potential for the windowless basement bathroom to appear overly dark and enclosed, DeLaney strategically incorporated elements that would introduce brightness and visual interest. Pure white quartz countertops were installed, offering a crisp contrast to the dark walls and vanity. The ceiling was painted a bright white, a common design technique to create the illusion of height and lightness in a space. Lighting fixtures, specifically sconces, were sourced from Arteriors, contributing to the room's aesthetic and illumination. A mirror from Pottery Barn was selected, along with white canisters from CB2, which served both functional and decorative purposes. Throughout the home, including this bathroom, Newport Brass plumbing fixtures were used, adding a subtle touch of color and elegance.
The bathroom's strategic location adjacent to the game room, a frequent gathering spot for the boys and their friends, influenced certain design choices. A humorous piece of artwork from Artfully Walls was chosen to add a playful touch, appealing to the younger users of the space. Durability was a primary concern given the target demographic, and DeLaney ensured that all materials could withstand heavy use. The concrete tile, selected for its resilience, was specifically noted for its ability to endure significant wear and tear, making it a practical choice for a high-traffic area utilized by children. This blend of aesthetic appeal and functional robustness defined the bathroom's transformation.
Overall, the project exemplifies a thoughtful balance between the homeowners' aesthetic preferences for a light, coastal feel and the practical demands of a family home, particularly in areas like the basement bathroom. DeLaney's design effectively created a unique, contrasting space that is both stylish and highly functional, transforming a potentially utilitarian area into a distinctive and durable room within the Huntersville residence. The integration of dark, moody tones with strategic bright accents and robust materials addresses both the visual and practical requirements of the space.
