We Tracked Down All The Chic Finishes in Sarah Sherman Samuel’s Tudor Bathroom Reno

Designer Sarah Sherman Samuel recently renovated a bathroom in a 1920s Tudor home in Grand Rapids, Michigan, imbuing it with a blend of modern and timeless elements while honoring the home's original architecture. The design approach centered on incorporating both historic cues and contemporary touches to create a unique aesthetic. The renovation process began with the selection of Rosso Alicante marble tiles from Zia for the floor, which set the tone for the entire space. Sherman Samuel intentionally randomized the tile pattern rather than bookmatching them, contributing to a more organic feel. For the walls, she opted for 4x4 ceramic tiles in a crisp linen shade, extending them to the ceiling to match another bathroom in the house and ensure a cohesive design throughout the home. A distinctive element in the bathroom's design is a braided mirror, conceptualized by Sherman Samuel herself, which echoes the sunroom's braided plaster molding. This thoughtful detail serves to integrate the new bathroom with existing architectural features of the Tudor home. The vanity area features a unique sink that, despite appearing to be travertine, is actually made of ceramic. Sherman Samuel, initially hesitant about faux finishes, was ultimately impressed by its realistic appearance. The cabinet beneath the sink is constructed from maple, stained to complement dark walnut knobs, which were creatively repurposed from wall hooks. This inventive use of materials and fixtures highlights the designer's knack for finding unexpected yet stylish solutions. In the shower, a notable design decision was the omission of a traditional shower niche. While typically favoring niches, the layout of this particular shower didn't allow for an ideal placement. Instead, Sherman Samuel plans to install a brass shelf to provide storage, which will coordinate with the shower hardware from Kohler’s Artifacts Collection. The chosen hardware features a Vibrant Brushed Modern Brass finish, adding a touch of contemporary elegance to the shower area. The shower also includes an arched glass door, a direct nod to the original muntins found in the home's windows, further solidifying the connection between the renovated space and the Tudor's historical character. The overall renovation demonstrates a meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to balancing historical authenticity with modern design principles. From the choice of flooring and wall tiles to the selection of fixtures and decorative elements, each decision contributed to a cohesive and elegantly updated bathroom. The project serves as an example of how to successfully modernize a historic space while preserving its inherent charm and architectural integrity, creating a bathroom that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. #BathroomRenovation #TudorHome #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #SarahShermanSamuel #DesignInspiration #ModernTimelessDesign #BathroomRenovation #TudorHome #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #SarahShermanSamuel #DesignInspiration #ModernTimelessDesign
