3D printed vases turn your recycled water bottles into design objects
Italian designer Libero Rutilo has introduced a series of 3D printed flower vases that creatively blend upcycling with additive manufacturing. These innovative designs are intended to give new purpose to common half-liter PET plastic water and soft drink bottles, transforming them into aesthetically pleasing home decor items. The collection features four distinct pattern styles that easily screw onto the bottle cap, effectively concealing the original container beneath a geometric mesh structure.
The initiative addresses the growing concern of plastic waste by offering a practical and visually appealing method for reusing single-use plastic bottles. Rutilo emphasizes that while recycling a single bottle may not solve global environmental challenges, it represents a tangible step towards adopting an environmentally conscious lifestyle. The design concept focuses on extending the lifespan of plastic bottles beyond their initial use, fostering a culture of reuse rather than immediate disposal.
Each vase design offers a unique aesthetic. The 'spider vase' features an organic, biomorphic pattern, evoking natural forms. The 'sinuous vase' is characterized by its undulating curves, creating a wavy and dynamic appearance. The 'lace vase' draws inspiration from intricate crochet motifs, providing a delicate and decorative touch. Finally, the 'knitted vase' showcases exceptionally fine details, mimicking the texture and complexity of knitted fabrics. These varied styles ensure that users can choose a design that best fits their personal aesthetic and interior decor.
The vases are designed for ease of use, allowing consumers to simply place them over a standard water bottle and secure them by twisting them onto the cap. This straightforward assembly process makes it accessible for anyone to participate in this form of upcycling. The 3D printed structure not only provides a decorative outer shell but also functions as a stable base for the repurposed bottle, turning it into a functional and stylish vase for flowers.
Libero Rutilo's project highlights the potential of 3D printing technology in promoting sustainability and creative reuse. By offering open-source designs or readily available products, such initiatives can empower individuals to engage in upcycling activities, thereby reducing plastic waste and contributing to a circular economy. The combination of modern manufacturing techniques with eco-friendly principles positions these vases as both functional objects and statements of environmental responsibility.
