How to transform old vases into on-trend 'ceramic' style decor

An Australian home stylist and author, Geneva Vanderzeil from Brisbane, has shared an innovative and easy DIY method to up-cycle old vases and pots, transforming them into stylish, ceramic-looking décor. This creative project has sparked a widespread 'trash to terracotta up-cycling movement,' inspiring thousands to replicate the idea and share their results online. The core of the technique involves mixing bi-carb soda with water-based paint to achieve a textured, ceramic effect. This mixture is then applied in layers to old vases, creating a thick, authentic finish. Vanderzeil experimented with various paint additives, including plaster of Paris and sand, but found that bi-carb soda was the most effective due to its reaction with the water in the paint, yielding the desired ceramic texture. This method is praised for its simplicity and the ability to turn unappealing second-hand items into chic, modern decorative pieces suitable for any home. The versatility of the technique allows for any type or color of water-based paint to be used. While Vanderzeil initially used a 4L Megatreat Terracotta liquid paint, which is on the pricier side, she suggests that those on a budget can use small sample paint pots from hardware stores like Bunnings to achieve varied colors across multiple vases. Key tips for this DIY project include using both glass and old ceramic pots as a base. To ensure an authentic look and proper adherence, it is crucial to paint the inside, outside, and bottom of the vase, and to allow each layer of paint to dry completely before applying the next to prevent peeling. The amount of bi-carb soda can be adjusted to achieve the desired level of texture, and adding multiple layers of paint further enhances the authentic ceramic appearance. The transformed vases are not only suitable as indoor décor but can also serve as plant pots for gardens or hold artificial foliage inside the house. The demonstrative video showcasing this DIY project has gained significant traction online, amassing over half a million views on TikTok and more than 9,100 likes on Instagram, with viewers expressing enthusiasm and eagerness to try the project themselves. This up-cycling approach offers an accessible and budget-friendly way to update home décor, aligning with current trends while promoting sustainability by repurposing old items. #DIYHomeDecor #Upcycling #CeramicEffect #HomeStyling #BudgetDecor #CraftProjects #InteriorDesignTrends #GenevaVanderzeil #TerracottaStyle #DIYHomeDecor #Upcycling #CeramicEffect #HomeStyling #BudgetDecor #CraftProjects #InteriorDesignTrends #GenevaVanderzeil #TerracottaStyle
