Her venture into homeownership began eight years ago when she was captivated by the scenic beauty of Wethersfield Garden in Amenia. This discovery prompted her to research local properties, leading to the purchase of a 10.5-acre rocky and overgrown parcel of land in 2013. Duker's initial plan was to build her house from the ground up, a process she admits was filled with unforeseen challenges. She faced obstacles such as blasting through solid rock and encountering black bears, which served as a crash course in country living. Drawing inspiration from the symmetry and formality of European country homes, Duker collaborated with Sloan Architects in Millbrook. The final design of her dream home features a pared-down, more modern profile, better suited for the upstate New York climate and its practical needs. The main residence spans over 3,400 square feet, including a kitchen, living room, dining room, study, guest room/home office, mudroom, and powder room on the first floor. The second floor houses a primary suite, two additional bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a laundry area. Complementing the main house, Duker also added a pool, a 425-square-foot pool house, and a detached garage. Initially, Duker acted as her own general contractor, managing permits and subcontractors. However, she eventually enlisted the help of R.A. Nilsen Construction in Millbrook to get the project back on track. Once construction was complete, Duker focused on furnishing her home with a blend of antique finds from local shops and the renowned Brimfield Flea Market in Massachusetts. Her design aesthetic, characterized by warm whites and greiges, provided a consistent and elegant backdrop for these curated pieces, and also proved advantageous given pandemic-related supply chain issues.
