Inside Interior Designer Sara Bengur's Vastu Practice

Interior designer Sara Bengur, founder of her studio in 1993, integrates aesthetics with wellness to foster healthier and happier home environments. She is now expanding her wellness-focused approach by offering Vastu, an ancient Vedic science that she is certified in, to her clients. Vastu, a precursor to Feng Shui, focuses on aligning a space with natural forces to promote well-being. Bengur collaborates with Sonya Bekkerman, an art consultant and spiritual practitioner trained in the ritual of Puja, to provide this service. Together, they have developed the Vastu Puja practice, a service aimed at clearing blockages within the home and cultivating peace. Both Bengur and Bekkerman frequently visit and study in India to deepen their expertise in this practice. Bengur explains that Vastu, which dates back 8,000 to 10,000 years, aligns a home with cardinal directions and utilizes sacred geometric shapes called Yantras, strategically placed to achieve specific goals. This practice can be applied to any space, including homes, offices, or other buildings. Bengur likens Vastu to "acupuncture for the home," suggesting it alleviates energetic blockages. Each cardinal direction is linked to a different aspect of life, such as career, love, health, and relationships, and corresponds to a specific element: southwest with earth, southeast with fire, northwest with air, and northeast with water. Bengur has also developed a line of five room sprays, each aligned with one of these elements. Bekkerman highlights the core question of their practice: "How do physical spaces impact mental, emotional, spiritual health?" The process begins with a consultation where clients provide their floor plan and discuss life goals or challenges. Bengur and Bekkerman then formulate a plan to reconfigure the space and position Yantras to harness energy effectively. Bekkerman asserts that this methodology brings clients closer to peace by aligning their environment, thereby supporting all aspects of their lives and allowing energy to flow. She emphasizes that the effectiveness of the practice does not depend on the client's belief. An essential part of the process involves creating an altar in the home where clients can articulate their intentions, either privately or shared with the practitioners. Bengur notes that sometimes, the floor plan alone can reveal areas of imbalance, such as a stove in the northeast (water element) possibly creating tension. Bekkerman integrates her knowledge of the Puja practice, a ritual incorporating Vedic mantras, offerings, and chants, aimed at aligning with natural elements to evoke joy and peace. The unique combination of Vastu, Puja, and interior design expertise distinguishes their service. The duo report observing positive outcomes in clients' lives, including calming rambunctious pets and rekindling romantic relationships. Bekkerman personally experienced improved focus after Bengur advised her to adjust her desk placement, recommending creative workers face east and technical workers face north for optimal flow. While each client's Vastu Puja journey is individualized, Bengur offers general advice: avoid placing heavy objects in the center of a space to maintain energy flow and clear clutter from under beds to prevent blocking restful energy. For optimal sleep, she suggests positioning the head of the bed to face south. #InteriorDesign #Vastu #Puja #SpiritualPractice #Wellness #HomeDesign #EnergeticAlignment #AncientWisdom #HolisticLiving #InteriorDesign #Vastu #Puja #SpiritualPractice #Wellness #HomeDesign #EnergeticAlignment #AncientWisdom #HolisticLiving
