Casa Pueblo by M Studio is Ready Made for Global Nomads in Tulum
The boutique hotel Casa Pueblo, located in Tulum, Mexico, is a 15,000-square-foot collaboration between co-owner Derek Klein, co-owner Omar Rodriguez, and Mike Moser of M Studio. Klein, known for his successful Gitano bar and restaurant established in 2011, aimed to create a distinctive lodging experience that blends traditional Mexican colonial architecture with contemporary design sensibilities. This approach resulted in a style Klein describes as “tropical minimalism.”
The design of Casa Pueblo drew inspiration from the ongoing urbanization in Tulum over the past decade, as well as the rich historical architectural heritage of Mexico. The property features airy atriums and garden terraces, each equipped with saltwater pools, fostering a serene and integrated indoor-outdoor environment. The design prioritizes the use of local materials and craftsmanship, evident in elements such as handmade plaster sconces created by Justin James Grant, which unify the aesthetic throughout the spaces.
Furniture within Casa Pueblo is crafted from local hardwood, emphasizing sustainability and supporting regional artisans. Guests are offered custom Luuna memory-foam beds complemented by luxurious Parachute Home bedding, ensuring comfort and a high-end experience. The en-suite bathrooms are designed with walk-in rain showers and feature hand-sculpted concrete sinks, further showcasing the commitment to bespoke details and natural materials.
One of the illustrative features is the door to the first-floor mezzanine, fabricated from _pocte_, a local hardwood, with stairs and walls finished in custom plaster. A custom _tzalam_ stool with a woven leather seat is positioned between linen-curtained windows, contributing to the hotel’s artisanal charm. The second-floor balcony, designed by Mike Moser, is made of steel with a matte black varnish, providing a modern contrast to the natural elements.
The hotel’s outdoor spaces include a new terrace of washed black plaster housing custom loungers by the pool, and a central atrium shaded by a native _chaca_ tree, beneath which sits a custom _pocte_ dining table and benches. Custom copper stools with leather seats are also featured, enhancing the hotel's distinctive character. Casa Pueblo is situated just two miles from the beach, allowing guests easy access via bicycle.
The overall design ethos of Casa Pueblo caters to the global nomad, offering a blend of localized authenticity and modern comforts, making it a prominent destination within Tulum’s burgeoning hospitality scene.
