Jamie Bush Gives a Houston Midcentury House His Signature “Organic Modernist” Makeover

Los Angeles-based designer Jamie Bush has applied his "Organic Modernism" approach to the interiors of a 1963 Midcentury house in Houston's River Oaks neighborhood. The house, designed by Harwood Taylor of Neuhaus & Taylor, was previously restored and renovated in 2014 by Murphy Mears Architects. The current owners, a couple with two daughters, sought Bush's expertise to inject playfulness, color, and natural materials into the home, which they felt was too pristine. Bush's design philosophy emphasizes the synergy between the soft edges and curves found in nature and the angles of Modernist architecture, aiming to bridge the gap between architectural structure and interior comfort. Bush's intervention began by transforming the entry and connecting hallway into an art gallery, featuring paintings, sculptures, and drawings, including some of his own works. He views his art as "environmental" pieces that operate on a larger scale than individual furnishings. Biomorphic, peach-colored shapes were painted on the hallway's white walls, complementing framed drawings, while a distinctive blue ombré wallpaper covers the wall behind a large totemic sculpture. Bush designed a red wedge-shape console for the entry and painted a previously renovated slatted-wood partition black, enhancing the visual flow and modern aesthetic. The powder room off the entry showcases one of Paolo Soleri's bronze bells, adding a unique artistic touch. In the living room, a curved Vladimir Kagan sofa is paired with Bush’s custom white-oak Pier bookcase, which grounds one end of the room. At the opposite end, Bush’s 6-by-9-foot photograph, _Ultramarine Pink 2_, depicting chairs, is positioned above a smaller, sheepskin-draped Kagan sofa. Vintage French floor lamps, shaped like praying mantises, introduce a playful element, while a trio of polished brass coffee tables by Atelier de Troupe adds a shiny contrast to the room’s textures. These elements collectively contribute to Bush's "Organic Modernism," balancing sleek lines with natural forms and materials. The kitchen's existing white cabinets were framed by Bush with a slatted pergola and wall planks in white oak, introducing a warmer background layer. The adjacent dining area features Jill Greenberg’s photographs of animals and a collection of Mitsuko Ikeno ceramic vases, echoing Bush's artistic theme of "variations on a theme." The study incorporates a series of 67 woodblock prints by Tal R on a pink-painted accent wall. Bush opted for an ebonized round table with concealed electronics connections instead of a traditional desk, complemented by a curved red sectional sofa and a Moroccan-style rug over sisal carpeting. For the master bedroom, Bush designed three "floating" celadon-painted wall panels, one concealing a TV cabinet, each with a narrow, undulating brass shelf. Above the Naoto Fukasawa-designed bed, a delicate cast-bronze tree branch by Lisa Ludwig provides an airy counterpoint to the solid panels. Outdoors, Bush enhanced the pool area with new seating, retained a fixed canopy, replaced light fixtures with smoked-glass models in the colonnade, and added agave, canna lilies, and palms in planters to the landscaping. These design choices aim to create a cohesive and warm environment, blending modern design with natural elements and artistic expression throughout the home and its outdoor spaces. #OrganicModernism #MidcenturyModern #InteriorDesign #JamieBush #HoustonDesign #ResidentialDesign #HomeMakeover #ArchitecturalInteriors #ModernistHouse #OrganicModernism #MidcenturyModern #InteriorDesign #JamieBush #HoustonDesign #ResidentialDesign #HomeMakeover #ArchitecturalInteriors #ModernistHouse
