See How This Artek + Heath Collaboration Came Together to Reimagine a Classic
This article highlights the collaborative collection between Artek and Heath Ceramics, two brands with over 150 years of combined experience in designing and manufacturing. The collaboration reimagines iconic Artek pieces, the Tea Trolley 900 and Stool 60, by integrating exclusive ceramic designs from Heath. This partnership represents a fusion of historical design principles and contemporary craftsmanship.
The Artek Tea Trolley 900, originally designed by Aino and Alvar Aalto in 1937, drew inspiration from British tea culture and Japanese woodworking and architecture. This functionalist piece of furniture, characterized by its ceramic tiles and rattan basket, debuted internationally at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris. For this new collection, Heath Ceramics developed six unique tile tops for the Tea Trolley, drawing inspiration from vintage tile installations at their Sausalito factory and recent experiments from the Heath Clay Studio. These tiles are individually glazed, ensuring each piece is distinct.
The manufacturing process involves the trollies being made and assembled in Finland by Artek, while the tiles are crafted and installed in San Francisco by Heath. The glazes themselves are a result of experimental applications and unexpected combinations. For instance, one particular Universe glaze, developed in 2016 by Tung Chiang and Heath master glazer Winnie Crittenden, involves spraying glaze onto a plastic sheet to create organic beads, which are then transferred to the clay. Varying pressure during this transfer results in unique glaze variations.
Other glaze designs include 'Deep Sea,' an evolution of a layered glaze technique that creates a wide range of shades and textures, resulting in an atmospheric effect. The 'Maze' glaze is created by applying glaze from a squeeze bottle onto tiles on a spinning wheel, producing graphic and precise concentric lines. The 'Penumbra' glaze involves a pouring technique, similar to how Heath develops color swatches for new glazes.
Artek, founded in 1935 in Helsinki, Finland, by Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen, and Nils-Gustav Hahl, was established to sell furniture and promote modern living through exhibitions and educational initiatives. The brand continues to be an innovative force in modern design. Heath Ceramics' contribution brings experimental glazes from the 1940s into conversation with Artek's innovative wood-bending techniques from the 1930s, creating a collection that is both fresh and relevant to contemporary design.
The collaboration showcases the rich heritage and forward-thinking approach of both brands. It highlights a detailed process, from the slow drying of birch planks at the Artek factory in Finland to the meticulous glaze development and application at Heath Ceramics in California. The resulting pieces, like the Tea Trolley 900 in its various Heath-designed finishes (Landscape, Orbit, Penumbra, Maze, Deep Sea, and Universe), serve as versatile centerpieces suitable for various occasions, embodying a blend of tradition and innovation.
