White Rabbit House brings colour and terrazzo to an average London terrace

The White Rabbit House project, spearheaded by architects Gundry + Ducker, involves the renovation of a 1970s Neo-Georgian terrace house in Islington, London. This domestic redesign earned recognition in the ‘Most Unique Character’ category of the Don’t Move, Improve! competition, celebrating its vibrant and distinctive approach to residential architecture. The design draws inspiration from Georgian architecture, known for its clean external lines, balanced proportions, and majestic windows, which often concealed ornate interiors. The architects aimed to integrate a contemporary interpretation of Georgian interior style into a standard post-war house, seeking a playful interior that embraces unexpected elements and variations in scale, height, and atmosphere. The clients' practical requirements, such as a specific number of bedrooms and storage solutions, were met alongside the creation of a unique aesthetic. The home features a rich colour palette and materials like marble and terrazzo for flooring, complemented by custom-built joinery in a lively green hue, making the living areas visually striking. A significant architectural feature is the grand staircase, which opens into a triple-height void within the entrance hall, creating a sense of spaciousness and drama. This design choice highlights the architects' intention to create a dynamic and engaging internal environment. Christian Ducker, one of the architects, articulated the vision for a playful interior that accommodates the unexpected. The use of vibrant colours and textures, along with the grand staircase, contributes to the home's distinctive character, setting it apart from conventional residential designs. The project’s success in the Don’t Move, Improve! competition underscores its innovative approach and its ability to blend historical architectural references with modern sensibilities, all while transforming a standard terrace into a unique and inviting living space. The competition, organized by the NLA, acknowledges outstanding home improvement projects across London, with categories focusing on various aspects including sustainability, craftsmanship, and unique character. The White Rabbit House is a testament to how creative architectural intervention can reinterpret traditional styles for contemporary living, resulting in a home that is both functional and aesthetically captivating. #WhiteRabbitHouse #LondonArchitecture #GundryDucker #NeoGeorgian #ResidentialDesign #Terrazzo #ColourfulInteriors #HomeRenovation #StaircaseDesign #WhiteRabbitHouse #LondonArchitecture #GundryDucker #NeoGeorgian #ResidentialDesign #Terrazzo #ColourfulInteriors #HomeRenovation #StaircaseDesign
