Salone del Mobile’s Most Inviting Design Element: Food (Published 2016)

Amidst the overwhelming sea of design installations at Salone del Mobile, designers are incorporating culinary experiences to encourage visitors to pause and engage more deeply with their exhibits. The designer Tom Dixon, in collaboration with luxury countertop maker Caesarstone, transformed the Rotonda della Besana into four distinct dining halls, each inspired by one of the four elements. The fire-themed wing featured soot-colored tables, copper-treated, flamelike glass orb lights, and black coal flatbreads. The water-inspired wing showcased silver globules hanging overhead, serving hot soup with blast-chilled spring vegetables, presenting water in all three states of matter. Dixon, who also runs a restaurant in London, aimed to create an environment where guests could feel at home and be entertained amidst his designs. This approach of making visitors feel at home and encouraging them to linger was not exclusive to Dixon. Airbnb utilized Rossana Orlandi’s restaurant, Marta, inviting designers to furnish it with functional pieces. With paper cutouts proclaiming “Share the Love,” the space was transformed into a communal gathering area. Guests enjoyed lunch or aperitivo at a Shaker-style communal table designed by Giacomo Moor, accompanied by specially commissioned products from 25 designers, such as Dossofiorito’s suspended water carafes, all while savoring a panino and a glass of wine. The intention was to foster an informal and crafty atmosphere, encouraging interaction and a sense of shared experience. Furthermore, Max Lamb introduced a splatter-painted stool for the British design brand Hem with an ice-cream social. Located in a Brera courtyard, the exhibit featured a pushcart serving gelato in colors that matched the four editions of the stool, with custom-created flavors from the local Gelateria Rigoletto. This playful and accessible approach provided an enjoyable way for visitors to interact with the new design. Similarly, Carwan, a Beirut-based gallery, welcomed guests into its curator Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte’s Milan home for a Lebanese meal. This meal was served using new glazed porcelain pieces by designer Mary-Lynn Massoud, who prepared the lunch with her brother and fellow designer, Carlo Massoud. Bellavance-Lecompte explained that showcasing a home collection in a home setting made sense and offered a much-needed respite from the fast pace of design week. These initiatives highlight a growing trend at Salone del Mobile to integrate food and hospitality, creating more inviting and memorable experiences for attendees amidst the vast array of design presentations. #SaloneDelMobile #DesignExhibitions #FoodInDesign #TomDixon #Caesarstone #ExperientialDesign #MilanDesignWeek #HomeCollection #DesignInnovation #SaloneDelMobile #DesignExhibitions #FoodInDesign #TomDixon #Caesarstone #ExperientialDesign #MilanDesignWeek #HomeCollection #DesignInnovation
