Dallas Top Designers Dish on 2016 Kitchen Trends, From Lacquer Paint to LED Lights
The increasing prominence of open floorplans has placed a greater focus on kitchen aesthetics and functionality. For 2016, Dallas interior designers indicate a preference for crisp, uncluttered kitchen designs, balanced with the warmth of natural wood accents and flooring. Several key trends are shaping kitchen design this year.
First, countertops are seeing a significant shift away from traditional granite. Quartz is emerging as the preferred material due to its simple, clean look and exceptional durability. While marble's aesthetic is appreciated, its practicality for kitchen wear and tear is limited. Quartz, available in a wide spectrum of colors, offers superior strength and resistance to bacteria, making it a favored alternative, including varieties that mimic Carrera Marble. Other options like Vetrazzo recycled glass, Silestone in 'steel,' and stainless steel are also being utilized for their unique textures and seamless, impervious qualities.
Cabinetry is also undergoing a simplification, moving towards European-style flat doors. Designers note a departure from ornate details, arches, and carvings in favor of clean, flat-front cabinets with minimal pulls. This trend, heavily influenced by European design, provides a versatile foundation that allows homeowners to easily change the overall style of their kitchen through accessories, shifting from contemporary to traditional as desired. This minimalist approach complements the clean lines of quartz countertops.
Lacquer paint is gaining popularity for cabinets, adding a glamorous and polished finish that aligns with the overall crisp aesthetic. While white, particularly Benjamin Moore White Dove, remains a popular choice, there's a growing interest in stronger lacquer colors such as navy and gray, with black continuing to be a chic option. This high-gloss finish, often industrial-grade for enhanced durability, is seen as a sophisticated alternative to traditional cabinet finishes.
Although white kitchens remain popular, there's a resurgence of color on cabinets and islands. Soft shades like pale green, blue, and gray are being integrated, particularly with lacquer finishes. The trend of painting islands a contrasting color from the perimeter cabinets is evolving, with designers noting a preference for more subtle, complementary hues rather than stark differences, maintaining a cohesive yet interesting look.
Backsplashes are becoming a focal point for personality and creativity. With other kitchen elements leaning towards clean and understated, backsplashes offer an opportunity for bold patterns or vibrant colors. They are considered an inexpensive way to introduce a 'wow factor,' whether through an all-over bold design or a concentrated area, such as above the cooktop. Glass tiles, for instance, can create dramatic visual effects.
LED lighting is essential for both task illumination and ambient glow. Under-cabinet LED lights provide efficient and long-lasting light, while LED toekick lights offer a soft nightlight effect, consuming minimal electricity. Incorporating LEDs inside glass-front cabinets can also highlight accessories and add another dimension of color to the space.
Hardwood flooring is increasingly being integrated into kitchens to create a warm, continuous look throughout the first floor. Advances in polyurethane finishes make wood floors highly durable and suitable for kitchen environments. While natural products and textures contribute to a Craftsman feel, the finish of hardwoods is becoming less rustic, with subtle, in-grain scraping preferred over heavy hand-scraping to preserve the floor's longevity.
The trend of open shelving is giving way to a return of upper cabinets, driven by practical considerations of storage and maintenance. While open shelving offers a spacious feel, the need for organized displays and ample storage often leads homeowners back to traditional cabinetry. Translucent glass cabinets are offered as a compromise, providing a sense of openness while obscuring cabinet contents. In very large kitchens, designers may still incorporate open shelving or windows on one wall, but for smaller spaces, upper cabinets are essential.
For those who entertain frequently, 'party pantries' or catering kitchens are becoming a desired feature. These detached spaces, equipped with amenities like ice makers, dishwashers, and ample counter space, allow hosts to keep their main kitchen pristine during gatherings. This trend reflects a desire to manage the mess associated with entertaining in open-plan homes.
Finally, open kitchens are firmly established as the visual heart of the home, integrating seamlessly with adjacent living, dining, and breakfast areas. This design facilitates family interaction and offers diverse options for dining, working, and entertaining. Modern kitchens are viewed as social hubs, designed with enhanced seating and wider spaces to accommodate guests and facilitate short-term entertaining.
