Raw-Edges’ Islands collection for Caesarstone to go on show at the Salone del Mobile in Milan
The London-based design studio Raw-Edges, led by Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay, has partnered with surface specialist Caesarstone to develop the innovative ‘Islands’ collection. This collection, comprising seven themed living islands, reinterprets traditional domestic spaces and showcases unconventional uses for Caesarstone’s engineered stone products. The collection was initially previewed at Caesarstone’s Toronto outpost in January and is set to be officially unveiled at the Salone del Mobile in Milan, where it will offer a contemporary contrast to the historical 18th-century Palazzo Clerici.
The ‘Islands’ collection marks a strategic shift for Caesarstone, aiming to explore more imaginative applications for its surfaces. The design concept is centered around simplicity and intuition, with sheets of stone arranged into table-like structures serving as the foundational element for each island. Additional components are then integrated by being inserted into slots meticulously cut into the stone, making them an intrinsic part of the overall design.
Raw-Edges' seven islands encompass a range of functionalities, from practical home environments to more whimsical and artistic pieces. Functional islands include a kitchen, a bathtub, and a vanity top, demonstrating how Caesarstone materials can be seamlessly integrated into everyday living spaces. Beyond these, the collection features more playful elements such as a fish tank, a counter made from wooden blocks, and even a ping-pong table. The designers articulate their intention to create a balance between islands with clear, practical functions and those that offer a more poetic or artistic dimension.
The kitchen island stands out as the collection's focal point, representing the most ingenious use of space and challenging conventional kitchen layouts. This cooking island integrates various appliances and modular storage units, transforming the kitchen into a versatile and entertaining-centric environment. The collection utilizes seven distinct colors from Caesarstone’s ‘Classico’ series, featuring natural finishes that range from pearlescent greys to darker browns and charcoal. These quartz surfaces are thoughtfully combined with a variety of other materials, including reclaimed wood, ceramics, terracotta, glass, and vibrant accents. These complementary materials not only enhance the inherent beauty of the stone but also accentuate its striking grains and veined details.
The concept behind Raw-Edges’ designs is seemingly simple yet results in clever compositions. A video accompanies the collection, offering a humorous insight into the creative process and vividly bringing the designs to life. The collection highlights the versatility of Caesarstone products and Raw-Edges' ability to blend functionality with artistic expression, pushing the boundaries of contemporary interior design.
Key pieces within the collection further exemplify its diversity. A playful island features construction blocks made from reclaimed wood, while another showcases a wooden kitchen counter where the stone forms the base. The colorful wooden kitchen island demonstrates how elements are inserted into the stone. The planting table, crafted from Mink stone, provides an organic aesthetic, and the main kitchen island uses various colors from the 'Classico' series. The cooking island integrates appliances and storage within the countertop for entertaining. The ping-pong table is a simple design in 'Frosty Carrina' marble. A bathtub and shower are made from 'Piatra Gray' stone and wood. An offbeat fish tank is created from dark 'Raven' stone, emphasizing the balance between functional and poetic designs. Finally, a vanity island in 'Shitake' stone includes a clever towel slot, showcasing attention to detail.
