This giant Android tablet is GE’s smart kitchen command center
GE has introduced the Kitchen Hub, a 27-inch Android touchscreen integrated into an over-the-range hood vent, priced at $1,200. This device aims to transform the smart kitchen experience by offering a large display for various functions. While expensive, the reviewer found it more impressive than anticipated, suggesting that big screens might become a staple in smart kitchens.
The Kitchen Hub's design mirrors that of an over-the-range microwave and is available in stainless steel, black stainless, matte white, and matte black finishes. It features a 27-inch touchscreen, two cameras (a front-facing lens and one beneath the display for stovetop footage), a four-speed range hood fan with up to 600 CFM (cubic feet per minute), and three LED light bars for cooktop illumination. An auto-fan mode activates the fan on medium when excessive heat is detected. The range hood supports horizontal or vertical venting, or recirculation. The installation process is similar to that of over-the-range microwaves, requiring a support bracket attached to wall studs.
Unlike voice-first smart displays such as the Google Nest Hub or Amazon Echo Show, the Kitchen Hub operates on Android Oreo (version 8.1.0), emphasizing touch interaction. Voice commands via Google Assistant ("Hey, Google") are a secondary feature, with microphone performance noted as less responsive than dedicated smart displays. The device comes preloaded with Google's suite of apps and supports U Plus Connect, GE's smart home platform, for controlling GE appliances, Nest, and Philips Hue products. The Google Play Store allows users to download other Android-compatible apps, including those for Amazon Alexa, Ring security cameras, or August smart locks, or to consolidate control through the Google Home app.
The Kitchen Hub's camera setup, while a marketing highlight, presented some limitations. The front-facing camera, positioned above the touchscreen, is often too high for eye-level video calls for shorter individuals, though its wide frame captures the entire kitchen. The downward-facing camera, intended for capturing stovetop footage, is oddly centered on the front-right burner, limiting its utility for the entire cooktop or for kitchens without an adjacent countertop space. This design choice, according to GE, is intended to showcase creations on the most frequently used cooking spot.
Guided cooking is offered through Flavorly, GE's app powered by SideChef software. It provides step-by-step recipe instructions, with voice commands for navigation. A unique feature allows users to photograph handwritten recipe cards with the under-mounted camera, saving them to the Flavorly app. However, unlike smart displays, accessing guided recipes requires opening the app manually, limiting hands-free operation. Entertainment options are a strong point, with preloaded streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, ESPN, Sling TV, Amazon Prime Video, and HBOGo, and the ability to download more from the Google Play Store. This feature essentially turns the Kitchen Hub into a large, voice-controlled kitchen TV, depending on the kitchen layout for optimal viewing.
Durability concerns for a large touchscreen above a hot, steamy environment are addressed by a screen protection system that blows a constant airflow over the screen's edges to prevent condensation when active. GE recommends keeping the screen awake during cooking for this feature. The touchscreen is prone to fingerprints and requires regular cleaning, similar to a microwave. The metal grease filter also needs routine maintenance. The reviewer, at 5 feet 4 inches tall, noted that the continuous airflow blew into her eyes, suggesting a design oversight for shorter users. Ultimately, despite its innovative features and entertainment capabilities, the $1,200 price tag, coupled with design refinements needed for voice interaction and camera placement, makes the Kitchen Hub a promising first-generation product that might warrant waiting for future iterations or alternative options.
