This Kitchen Reno By Jenny Marrs Proves The Stove Can Be The Most Important Design Choice
Jenny Marrs, known for transforming fixer-upper spaces on her HGTV show "Fixer to Fabulous," emphasizes telling unique stories with special objects and personalizing design plans. In her renovation of The Welcome Inn, an 1870s historic home, Marrs aimed to blend old and new charm in the kitchen to create an inviting atmosphere for guests. Her design philosophy encourages homeowners to move beyond traditional design norms, as exemplified by her advice against using busy, imitation marble for countertops.
The centerpiece of The Welcome Inn's kitchen renovation is an eye-catching blue Italian stove. This appliance is positioned against herringbone flooring and subtly painted cabinets and drawers, framed by a mosaic tile backsplash. Marrs considers this blue stove the "statement piece and focal point of this space," achieving the exact aesthetic she envisioned for the kitchen. The stove, sourced from ILVE, is available in various colors, including emerald green, burgundy, midnight blue, antique white, glossy black, and stainless steel, offering flexibility for different design preferences.
When selecting a color palette for a kitchen, determining the intended aesthetic—be it classic, modern, or retro—is crucial for streamlined decision-making. The choice of colors and patterns significantly influences the kitchen's energy and overall feel. Once a statement piece, such as a distinctive stove, is chosen, subsequent design elements can be selected to complement it. For Marrs' project, this involved addressing practical concerns like poor lighting; she added windows on both sides of the stove to enhance natural light and brighten the space.
The successful renovation has transformed The Welcome Inn into a welcoming destination for guests, hosting events like weddings and celebrations. Marrs' initial vision of creating an inviting gathering place has been realized, largely due to the strategic incorporation of focal point features like the striking blue stove. This approach highlights how a single, well-chosen appliance can dictate the design direction and atmosphere of an entire kitchen, making it a critical element in the overall home design.
