Rammed-earth walls make up a beautiful retreat hidden in the Zhejiang mountains

The Retreat Village, an eco-sensitive resort designed by international architecture firm kooo architects, is nestled in the misty mountains of Zhejiang, China. Commissioned by Hangzhou Origin Villa Hotel & Resort, this cluster of luxury suites is situated in Dashan Village. The design draws inspiration from local architectural traditions and utilizes indigenous materials and construction techniques, notably rammed-earth construction, to ensure the resort seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings. This project emphasizes a harmonious relationship between built structures and the environment. Completed over two years, the Retreat Village is located on a remote, rural mountain. While the original village architecture predominantly featured rammed-earth walls constructed from local soils, the architects opted for a balanced approach in the new construction. They limited the extensive use of rammed earth to avoid making interior spaces feel overly dark and restrictive, instead incorporating a diverse palette of natural materials. This material selection includes bamboo, red bricks, local stone, and carbonized wood, contributing to a rich and varied aesthetic that remains true to the regional context. The architectural strategy prioritized minimizing environmental impact. The design team exclusively sourced locally produced and recycled materials, reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation and manufacturing. Furthermore, the buildings were strategically positioned to conform to the mountain's natural contours, rather than imposing artificial alterations on the landscape. Each suite is oriented to face different directions, a deliberate choice aimed at enhancing guest privacy while simultaneously maximizing the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. This thoughtful siting creates an immersive indoor-outdoor living experience for visitors. The deliberate use of natural materials and careful placement of the structures contribute significantly to the village's ability to blend into its mountainous environment. The architects aimed for the buildings to appear as if they naturally emerged from the landscape, rather than standing out as foreign intrusions. The interior lighting scheme further reinforces the tranquil and natural ambiance. In an area where external light sources are minimal at night, the resort's lighting design is intentionally subdued. Instead of relying on bright, uniform illumination from downlights, the spaces are lit by soft, omnidirectional, umbrella-like fixtures, such as free-standing and table lamps. These lights create gentle arcs of light and shadow that highlight the smooth finishes and rounded edges of the walls and ceilings, fostering a warm, calming, and comfortable atmosphere. This approach ensures that the interior remains cozy and inviting, complementing the serene mountain backdrop. #RammedEarthConstruction #EcoResort #SustainableArchitecture #LocalMaterials #ZhejiangChina #MountainRetreat #KoOOArchitects #NaturalBuilding #RuralTourism #RammedEarthConstruction #EcoResort #SustainableArchitecture #LocalMaterials #ZhejiangChina #MountainRetreat #KoOOArchitects #NaturalBuilding #RuralTourism
