Feldman Architecture designs San Francisco home with rooftop garden and indoor swing
Feldman Architecture has completed "Fitty Wun," a four-level townhouse in San Francisco, California, characterized by its contrasting front and rear facades and a prominent metal-framed staircase that incorporates an indoor swing. The front facade, rendered in grey, features a double-height entry, establishing a contemporary aesthetic while subtly referencing the traditional, monochrome townhouses prevalent in the neighborhood. In contrast, the rear of the residence utilizes white pillars and light timber cladding, contributing to a sense of warmth and openness.
The top floor of the residence includes a small unit and a terrace, which functions as a rooftop garden providing views of the city. The design of Fitty Wun reflects the client's energetic and playful lifestyle, a couple with three young sons, who adopt a "work hard, play hard" philosophy. The ground level comprises a foyer, den, storage room, family room, bathroom, and garage. Access to the main living area on the second floor is via a staircase.
The second floor is defined by a double-height ceiling in the kitchen, creating an expansive central space. A dining room is positioned at the front of the house, while a living room at the rear features sliding glass doors that open onto a compact outdoor deck. A key architectural element is the grand, three-level wrap-around staircase, constructed from dark metal screens. An indoor swing is suspended from this metal frame, positioned within an open area adjacent to the kitchen, serving as a central point for family interaction.
This central space, described by the firm as a "welcoming, warm kind of panopticon," allows the children freedom while keeping them within earshot of their parents. Above the main living area, on the third floor, are two bedrooms at the front of the house and a master suite overlooking the back garden. A catwalk connects these three bedrooms, with a detached bathroom and laundry room also located on this level.
A smaller staircase extends over the atrium, leading to a floating unit which, in turn, provides access to the rooftop deck. This black-clad pod functions as a secluded retreat from the more open communal areas below. Consistent with many San Francisco townhouses, the narrow architectural footprint of Fitty Wun is designed to maximize its connection with the private garden at the rear.
Fitty Wun is part of a trend of updated and newly constructed residences in San Francisco. Previous projects by Feldman Architecture in California include a residence featuring windowed garage doors that offer views of Sonoma Valley and a house with rammed earth walls and timber details on a farm in the Central Valley. The project's team included Design Line Construction for contracting, Kim Cladas for lighting design, and the owner collaborating with Loretta Gargan Landscape + Design for landscape design, with Fred Ballerini handling the green roof implementation. Joe Fletcher provided the photography for the project.
