A Rainforest-Inspired Bathroom That Re-creates Showering Outdoors Inside
The Kips Bay Decorator Show House in Palm Beach, Florida, featured a unique bathroom design by Tavia Forbes and Monet Masters of Forbes Masters, aiming to replicate the luxurious experience of showering outdoors. Inspired by their stay at Dorado Beach in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the designers transformed a small, windowless bathroom into a rainforest-like oasis, focusing on three key elements: plant life, earth-tone marble tiles, and wavy accents.
To create a more open and natural feel, the designers removed the previous glass-panel shower door. They opted for honed floor tiles that were strategically cut to slope towards the drain, eliminating the need for a partition and contributing to a seamless aesthetic. A rain showerhead was discreetly integrated into the ceiling, almost invisibly matching the black painted surface. To enhance the alfresco ambiance, blown-glass vases containing large monstera leaves and other greenery, some with their roots still intact for longevity, were mounted on the shower walls.
The second crucial element was the use of earth-tone marble tiles. Afrodit marble, sourced from Turkey and characterized by its pink and dark gray splotches, was applied to almost all surfaces of the bathroom, excluding the shower area. This choice was deliberate, serving as a harmonious transition from the terracotta floors prevalent in the rest of the house. The designers also utilized offcuts of this stone to craft a floating ledge beneath the mirror, providing a practical yet integrated space for toiletries.
Finally, wavy accents further reinforced the tropical theme. The mirror's undulating curves were designed to evoke the shape of a raindrop, while the pendant light above the pedestal sink was crafted to resemble a water lily, with its clay material complementing the room's terracotta hues. The gray-blue shower wall tiles, aptly named Oasis, were detailed with marble pencil fluting, creating stripe patterns that broke up negative space and drew attention to a stark white Hopeton St. Clair painting positioned across from the sink. The overall design successfully transported visitors to a refreshing, vacation-worthy environment.
