A Rainforest-Inspired Bathroom That Re-creates Showering Outdoors Inside
The article details how designers Tavia Forbes and Monet Masters of Forbes Masters transformed a small, windowless bathroom into a rainforest-inspired oasis, drawing inspiration from their luxurious outdoor showering experience at Dorado Beach in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This design was showcased at the fourth annual Kips Bay Decorator Show House in Palm Beach, Florida.
To achieve an open, natural feel in the compact space, Forbes and Masters removed the previous shower's glass-panel door. They installed honed floor tiles that were strategically cut to slope towards the drain, eliminating the need for a partition and contributing to a seamless aesthetic. A rain showerhead was discreetly integrated into the ceiling, almost perfectly matching the black painted surface, further enhancing the illusion of showering outdoors. For an authentic alfresco touch, the designers incorporated blown-glass vases filled with large monstera leaves and other greenery, mounting them directly onto the shower walls. These plants, some with their roots intact, were chosen for their longevity and ability to maintain the vibrant, natural ambiance.
The material palette played a crucial role in creating the desired atmosphere. The designers selected Afrodit marble, quarried in Turkey and known for its distinctive pink and dark gray splotches, to cover all surfaces except the shower area. This choice provided a smooth transition from the house's existing terracotta floors, establishing a cohesive design language. Offcuts from the marble were ingeniously repurposed to create a floating ledge beneath the mirror, offering a practical storage solution for toiletries while maintaining the bathroom's minimalist elegance.
Curved elements were strategically introduced to evoke a tropical aesthetic. The mirror's undulating shape was designed to resemble a raindrop, while the pendant light positioned above the pedestal sink was crafted to mimic a water lily, reinforcing the natural, organic theme. Forbes noted that the clay material of the pendant light complemented the terracotta tones found throughout the house. Furthermore, the gray-blue shower wall tiles, aptly named "Oasis," were accented with subtle stripe detailing created from marble pencil fluting. These borders not only added visual interest to the walls but also drew attention to a stark white Hopeton St. Clair painting situated across from the sink, completing the sophisticated and transportive design of the bathroom.
