Modern window treatments – 11 trending ideas to elevate your view

Modern window treatments offer more than just privacy; they can significantly enhance a room's aesthetic, control light and UV exposure, and contribute to the overall style from both inside and out. The variety of options available today allows for creative exploration in coordinating colors, textures, and installation methods to achieve a beautifully curated space. Whether designing for a modern living room, bedroom, kitchen, or dining area, several trending ideas can elevate the look and feel of a home. One approach is to opt for heavy drapes, particularly in grand and formal spaces. These can introduce a sense of luxury and warmth, even in contemporary or minimalistic settings, moving beyond the traditional notion of light, floaty styles. The placement of curtain rods also plays a crucial role. Installing rods higher towards the ceiling and allowing curtains to 'kiss' the floor creates longer lines, visually heightening the ceilings and adding movement to a minimalist room. Layering window treatments, much like rug placement, can add a sense of luxury. This involves combining different fabrics and styles, such as neutral fabric blinds with decorative trimming alongside textured curtains, to create a cozy yet trendy look. When selecting treatments, it's important to consider natural light. While there's no single 'best' way to dress a window, translucent materials like sheers and light linens are often recommended for principal rooms, especially in homes where maximizing natural light is a priority. Pelmets, the decorative boards fixed above windows to conceal curtain rods, are experiencing a resurgence. Designers are experimenting with painted and upholstered pelmets in various colors and patterns, adding a classic detail to contemporary window treatments. Investing in wooden shades is another popular option. Woven wood shades introduce an organic feel and texture to a room, and when paired with drapery panels, they can be a cost-effective solution, especially when customized for light filtering or blackout capabilities. Automation is a growing trend in modern window treatments. Integrating features that allow shades to be raised and lowered with a tap of a button, whether through high-tech systems or battery-powered options, offers convenience and efficiency. This extends beyond shades to smart curtains, with various options available for different budgets. Injecting color through drapes is an effective way to change a room's vibe without repainting walls, offering a 'punchy hue' that can look just as light and airy as more subtle options, even with opaque fabrics. White linen sheers are ideal for those who want to integrate outdoor views while maintaining a modern aesthetic. Clean tracks with no visible hardware, often concealed within drapery pockets, further enhance this seamless look. Automating these systems with AV integration (like Creston or Lutron) allows for remote control, a popular feature among clients. Roman blinds are favored for their ability to make a window look dressed and attractive, even when not in use. Mounting them within the window reveal, if space allows, imposes less on the room and preserves the windowsill. For shorter windows, mounting the blind outside the reveal, slightly higher and wider, can create the illusion of a taller window and minimize light bleed. This also opens up the possibility of adding a second privacy blind within the reveal. Roller blinds, though sometimes overlooked due to their 'cartridge,' have evolved. Solutions include hiding the roll behind a pelmet, reverse rolling the blind to conceal the cartridge, or, in full renovations, concealing the blind within the ceiling for a contemporary, seamless look. The overarching trend for modern homes focuses on ceiling-recessed and hidden tracks, creating seamless lines for both drapery and roll-down shades. The integration of remote and multi-functional window dressings is also becoming increasingly popular due to the variety of options available. #ModernWindowTreatments #InteriorDesignTrends #CurtainIdeas #ShadeOptions #HomeDecor #WindowStyling #AutomatedWindowTreatments #LayeredWindowTreatments #Pelmets #RomanBlinds #RollerBlinds #ModernWindowTreatments #InteriorDesignTrends #CurtainIdeas #ShadeOptions #HomeDecor #WindowStyling #AutomatedWindowTreatments #LayeredWindowTreatments #Pelmets #RomanBlinds #RollerBlinds
