The Windows in This Brooklyn Home Were Too Good, the Owner Nixed Curtains Altogether

Agnethe Glatved, a freelance photo creative director, and her photographer husband Matthew Septimus, initially dismissed a circa-1910 home in Ditmas Park, New York, due to its unappealing interior with murky paint, fluorescent kitchen lighting, and blue carpeting. However, Glatved had a strong intuition to revisit the property. During her second viewing, she discovered a bank of windows hidden behind heavy curtains. This revelation completely transformed her perception of the space, revealing its potential to be filled with natural light, a quality she greatly valued from her upbringing in western Norway where soft, airy spaces are common. Inspired by this natural light, Glatved made the radical decision to remove all window treatments, a choice she has maintained for a decade. To further enhance the light's interaction with the interior, she commissioned a contractor to plaster the walls, creating a textured surface that beautifully reflects the sunlight. Most rooms were painted in Benjamin Moore’s White Dove to maximize brightness. Beyond cosmetic changes, a significant renovation involved relocating the kitchen. The original kitchen was deemed unsalvageable, and an architect friend suggested moving it to the then-dining area, which boasted high ceilings and easy access to the living room. The former kitchen space was converted into a cozy TV room for their children. The new kitchen, located in a narrow space, required innovative design solutions. Wall cabinets were specifically designed to be only 12 inches deep, just enough to accommodate dinner plates, and Glatved meticulously measured her tallest pots to ensure custom drawer fittings. Over time, the family curated a vibrant collection of ceramics, beginning with vintage Cafe au Lait bowls and expanding to include pieces from Mud Australia and Gleena Ceramics. Despite the extensive renovations, Glatved still has a wishlist, including more efficient closets, aligning with her preference for Scandinavian design's emphasis on purpose and efficiency. A significant investment in their dining room is a Hans Wegner table, purchased with a book project paycheck, which Glatved cherishes. The home is adorned with art from artist friends and photographs by Septimus, creating a sense of constant presence from loved ones. The shelves are also filled with photography books, a shared passion for the couple, including titles like 'Georgia O’Keeffe: A Portrait by Alfred Stieglitz' and 'Robert Frank: Seven Stories.' In the TV room, Glatved embraced the lack of natural light by painting the walls in Farrow & Ball’s Oval Room Blue, creating a monochromatic and intimate atmosphere with an IKEA sofa and large photographs by Septimus. Her daughter's bedroom features an extensive magazine collage, a project initiated during the pandemic, which Glatved continues to maintain. While the bedroom is minimalist, Glatved enjoys experimenting with bedding combinations, a passion influenced by a transformative trip to India that introduced her to new colors. She admits to taking a long time to commit to wall decorations, finding sufficient visual interest in the natural light that bathes their bedroom, which she describes as feeling like a treehouse. The abundance of natural light in their home has also fostered Glatved's green thumb. The front porch sills are now home to numerous thriving plants, a notable change for someone who previously struggled to keep plants alive. Her journey into gardening began with jade, aloe, and geraniums, and now all her plants flourish. The overall design of the home reflects a deliberate embrace of natural light, personal expression through art and cherished objects, and practical functionality, all while maintaining a connection to Glatved's Scandinavian aesthetic roots. #BrooklynHome #NaturalLight #ScandinavianDesign #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #KitchenRemodel #PhotographyArt #PersonalizedDecor #DitmasPark #BrooklynHome #NaturalLight #ScandinavianDesign #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #KitchenRemodel #PhotographyArt #PersonalizedDecor #DitmasPark
