Go Inside This Cozy Cottage in Green Hills
Matt Donahoe, principal of Bureau Interior Design + Architectural Consulting, has meticulously renovated his 4,500-square-foot cottage in Green Hills, infusing it with a 'hygge' aesthetic, a Danish concept emphasizing comfort and conviviality. Donahoe's design philosophy for his home, which he shares with his husband, blends Old World charm with modern elements, creating a serene environment that is both classic and contemporary. His inspiration draws from a childhood spent in Germany and travels to Scandinavia, where he developed an appreciation for thoughtful editing and personalized, cozy spaces.
The extensive renovation included significant structural and aesthetic changes. Donahoe collaborated with contractor David Tachek of Noble Building Group, architectural consultant Nick Dryden of DAAD, and landscape architect Jason Gabbard of Page|Duke Landscape Architects to achieve his vision. Key elements of the interior redesign include resurfaced white oak floors, updated light fixtures, and new windows and doors. A central feature is the application of Venetian plaster on the walls of common areas and the master wing. This material, known for its ability to reflect light and create a soft, earthy tone, complements the home's minimalist yet inviting atmosphere.
Donahoe's design pays homage to interior designer John Saladino, known for his relaxed elegance, rich textiles, aged stone surfaces, and the juxtaposition of varied elements like light and dark, and old and new. This influence is evident in the timeless quality of the cottage's design, which avoids being overdone while maintaining sophistication. The home features European flourishes, such as black accent paint on the exterior, modern art, and rustic textures, all contributing to the 'hygge' feel.
The upstairs bonus room is highlighted as Donahoe’s favorite space, designed to encourage social gatherings. It is bright and airy, anchored by a large sectional and a bar area clad in Belgian bluestone. Abstract artworks by Jean-Marc Louis and Bradley Duncan add a touch of modern whimsy. The exterior of the home also underwent a transformation; board and batten and some hardy board details were removed, and Belgian plaster was added to give an older, more elegant appearance, contrasted with black accents.
Even the backyard was re-imagined to align with the new mood of the house. The pool area now features Indiana limestone coping and Tennessee crab orchard flagstone decking. The pool's water line tile and polish color were darkened to enhance the mood and echo the black elements of the house's exterior. The landscaping was redeveloped into a lush, naturalistic design, drawing inspiration from the work of Bunny Williams. Donahoe describes the home as a personal respite, a 'little cottage nestled behind the trees' in a bustling area, where old and new converge to create a calming and comfortable living space.
