To achieve this, walls were removed on the ground and a portion of the second floor, and the stair opening was enlarged, sacrificing some upstairs floor space to increase light flow. All windows were replaced with double-glazed tilt-and-turn units, except for casement windows in the kitchen, and the HVAC and other mechanical systems were entirely updated, significantly improving the home's energy performance. The bunkhouse is strategically located less than ten feet uphill from the property's existing 100-year-old log cabin. The original cabin has a unique history, having been built on Lopez Island, then dismantled and transported to Guemes Island in the 1940s. Unlike many neighboring properties that are built at the water's edge, both the original cabin and the new bunkhouse are positioned just inside the treeline. This placement offers a sense of privacy and seclusion while still providing westward views. SHED Architecture & Design's approach prioritized minimizing disturbance to the natural forested site.
