Kitchen Remodel Contest
This article showcases six distinct kitchen remodeling projects from Westchester County homeowners, highlighting various design aesthetics, functional improvements, and the challenges encountered during the renovation process. Each featured kitchen includes "before" and "after" photographs, along with detailed descriptions of the design inspirations, key features, and product selections.
The first project, "A Swedish Sensibility" by Kerstin and Lars Lindh in Briarcliff Manor, involved expanding their original kitchen by 250 square feet to accommodate their growing family. The design focused on a sleek, modern, and light-filled space, minimizing upper cabinets and maximizing storage with two large center islands. A notable aspect was the initial hesitation regarding the size of the 48-inch range hood, which ultimately proved to be the correct choice for balancing the space. Key elements included Apple Valley cabinets, Electrolux appliances, Silestone and CaesarStone countertops, and glass tiles from Oceanside.
The second renovation, "From Rustic to Fantastic" by Diane and Christopher Prendergast of New Rochelle, transformed a kitchen with old pine cabinets and limited counter space into a modern, open-concept area. The couple utilized Ikea's kitchen planning software and self-assembled and installed the cabinets, a process that took approximately six months. This hands-on approach allowed them to create a space capable of hosting up to 70 guests, featuring Ikea cabinets and range hood, GE Profile appliances, a Bosch dishwasher, and granite countertops from Westchester Marble & Granite.
"The Bronze Age" by Elissa and David Leftkowitz in Pleasantville involved updating a 1987 ultra-contemporary kitchen to better align with the home's overall design. The design was inspired by Jenn-Air oil-rubbed bronze appliances, which dictated the color scheme. Emphasis was placed on functionality as much as aesthetics, with the homeowner advising future remodelers to consider their lifestyle when designing. Components included Renninger cabinets, Dakota cabinet hardware, Jenn-Air appliances, Durango Honed Travertine tile, a custom copper farmhouse sink, and Bronzite granite countertops.
Sally Sedler's "A Petite Homeowner Gets a Right Size Kitchen" in Rye Brook addressed a kitchen that was not ergonomically suited for her height. Working with Bilotta Kitchen Design Center, she achieved a functional kitchen with walnut cabinets that maximize vertical storage. A specific challenge noted was a defective X-O exhaust fan, leading to double installation costs. The kitchen features Signature Kitchen Cabinetry, Artistic Tile backsplash, ASKO, Jenn-Air, and KitchenAid appliances, a Grohe faucet, CaesarStone countertop, and Halo vinyl flooring.
Kenneth Kail and Ivy Hwang's "A Kitchen Worthy of the View" in Briarcliff Manor transformed a dated pink kitchen with Formica countertops into a modern space that complements their home's panoramic Hudson River views. The design included a large, open area with a study and dining area, a BlueStar cooktop set at a lower height for wok cooking, and an adjoining greenhouse for growing herbs. Their renovation process highlighted the importance of thoroughly vetting contractors and architects. The kitchen incorporates natural maple cabinets by Crown Point Cabinetry, Silestone Verde Aqua countertop, Spa Green quartzite tiles, Liebherr, GE Monogram, Bosch, and Miele appliances, and Fire Farm Kyoto and Tech Lighting pendants.
Finally, Pat and Ellen Lee's "A Most Elegant Lean-To" in White Plains revamped a small, dilapidated kitchen into a spacious 300-square-foot area with a unique cooking fireplace, Pat's favorite feature. The design blends rustic and sophisticated elements, featuring mahogany cabinets, a red oak ceiling, and California slate floors. Despite some contractor issues, the homeowners were highly satisfied with their kitchen designer from Amazing Spaces LLC. This kitchen boasts Bronzite granite countertops, Thermador appliances, custom leather couches, and Mica Lamp Company lighting.
