2018 Home Design Contest Finalists • Kitchen
This article highlights the finalists in the kitchen category for the 2018 Home Design Contest, showcasing a variety of design philosophies and innovative solutions from Delaware-based designers and builders. Each featured kitchen presents unique characteristics, addressing different aesthetic preferences and functional requirements of homeowners.
One prominent design comes from Alesi Custom Builders & Renovators, Inc., located in Bethany Beach. This kitchen exemplifies an open-concept layout, seamlessly integrating the cooking area with the dining and living spaces. A large island serves as a central hub for entertaining, enhancing social interaction. Additionally, an exterior door extends the kitchen's functionality to an outdoor cooking area on sunny days, demonstrating a focus on indoor-outdoor living.
Another entry, designed by Gayle Wright of Bath Kitchen and Tile Center, was inspired by a client's dream kitchen captured in a photograph. This project features stunning Taj Mahal Quartzite countertops, which are complemented by a sophisticated Calacutta Ora tile backsplash, creating a luxurious and personalized space.
Chrystal Hess, also from Bath Kitchen and Tile Center, contributed a design for a classic kitchen intended to maintain its appeal over time. This timeless aesthetic is achieved through the combination of Timberlake Kinsdale Espresso cabinets, Viscount White Granite countertops, and Renova gray flooring, resulting in a cohesive and elegant look.
Cheryl Umbles Interior Design undertook a significant renovation of a kitchen in a historic Bancroft home. The project transformed an existing casual, eclectic space into a timeless and highly functional area suitable for a busy young family. The entire space was gutted, making way for a seven-foot island, an adjoining baker's cabinet, and perimeter cabinets equipped with two of every appliance, all finished with translucent quartzite, emphasizing both aesthetics and utility.
Kate FitzGerald-Wilks by Timeless Design presented two distinct kitchen renovations. One project focused on creating a bright and modern ambiance. This was achieved using an eye-catching backsplash composed of mother-of-pearl mosaic tiles and white glazed hand-thrown subway tiles. White beadboard-front shaker cabinets, marble-like quartz countertops, and chrome cabinet pulls further enhance the contemporary feel. The design is completed with white and chrome low-back leather stools and chrome pendants.
The second project by Kate FitzGerald-Wilks involved reimagining a dated kitchen and an underutilized dining room into a substantial, fully customized kitchen. This design prioritized functional flow by removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room and reorienting the spaces to create a more open concept, significantly improving the overall layout for entertaining and food preparation. Collaborators on this project included Black Dog Construction, Stone Masters, and Accent Hardwood.
Megan Gorelick Interiors, Inc. crafted a dreamy kitchen for a client, incorporating a light blue paint palette that evokes a serene atmosphere. The design is further enhanced by lighting from Currey and Company and barstools sourced from Sunpan, adding unique touches to the space.
Finally, Waterbury Kitchen and Bath, in collaboration with Marra Homes, designed a clean and pristine kitchen described as "A Place to Gather." This kitchen features custom inset cabinetry with a white painted finish, quartz countertops, and polished nickel fixtures, combining elegance with practicality to create an inviting and functional space. These designs collectively illustrate the diverse approaches taken by professionals to meet varying client needs and preferences in kitchen design.
