Want Multicolored Cabinets? Joy Cho Has a Strategy for Picking Complementary Hues

Joy Cho, founder and creative director of Oh Joy!, applied a strategic approach to selecting complementary hues for the multicolored cabinets in her new guesthouse–slash–work studio. Collaborating with Project M Plus and Boswell Construction, Cho utilized door fronts from Reform’s Chelsea by Christina Meyer Bengtsson line, designed to fit simple IKEA frames. Instead of using all four color options available, she opted for a trio: medium-toned gray, muted lavender, and untreated brass. This decision aligns with her preference for odd numbers in design, a principle she applies to create visual balance and interest. Cho's methodology for incorporating metal fronts into a space emphasizes moderation. She advises using them sparingly, particularly avoiding high-touch areas like refrigerator panels, to minimize visible fingerprints and maintenance. For those looking to emulate this multicolored cabinet trend, Cho suggests focusing on analogous colors—hues that are adjacent on the color wheel. This ensures that the chosen colors, even when diverse, maintain a cohesive and harmonious relationship, whether through similar depth or opacity. This approach prevents the design from appearing disjointed and instead creates a sense of intentionality and flow. The kitchen's design also incorporates a bright, white Caesarstone countertop, which contrasts with the cabinet colors while enhancing the natural light entering the space through large glass windows. This choice, along with creamy white backsplash tiles and terrazzo floors, helps to reflect light and create an airy, open atmosphere. While Reform typically pairs this cabinet collection with a black countertop, Cho's selection demonstrates how thoughtful material choices can significantly impact the overall brightness and spaciousness of a room. Expanding on her design philosophy, Cho offers additional countertop, cabinet paint, and hardware combinations. One recommendation is a fun yet chic kitchen featuring a textured, colored countertop, complemented by a rich, sultry cabinet color and brass pulls. She notes that moody emerald and pink, despite their strong presence, can work effectively together, even referencing her own use of a hunter green central beam and rosy sofas in her living room. Another suggestion draws inspiration from the ocean, proposing an airy blue-green cabinet color paired with organic gold hardware accents and white countertops that have subtle veining. These combinations highlight her belief in viewing kitchen design as a sophisticated puzzle, where each element contributes to a cohesive and appealing aesthetic, moving beyond conventional matching expectations. Her advice encourages experimentation with color and material, guided by principles of balance and visual harmony, to achieve distinctive and personalized kitchen spaces. #KitchenDesign #CabinetColors #InteriorDesign #ColorTheory #HomeRenovation #KitchenRemodel #DesignInspiration #OhJoy #KitchenDesign #CabinetColors #InteriorDesign #ColorTheory #HomeRenovation #KitchenRemodel #DesignInspiration #OhJoy
