How an Instagram-Worthy Kitchen Renovation Comes Alive With the Right Surfaces
Los Angeles–based designer Sarah Sherman Samuel undertook a kitchen renovation for clients Eden and Zan Passante, who own a California ranch home. The primary goal was to modernize the space and create a brighter aesthetic, with a particular focus on the kitchen's visual appeal. Eden Passante, a lifestyle blogger behind Sugar and Charm, required a highly photogenic kitchen suitable for her online content, which frequently features hosting tips, recipes, and top-down photos of countertops for her blog and Instagram. This need for both aesthetic quality and practical durability led to the selection of Caesarstone quartz surfaces.
Caesarstone quartz was chosen for its durability, reliability, nonporous nature, and antimicrobial qualities, which collectively contribute to minimal maintenance. This was a crucial factor for Eden, as it eliminates the need for extensive cleaning or resealing before photo shoots, requiring only a simple wipe-down with warm soapy water to maintain its appearance. From a designer's perspective, Sarah Sherman Samuel appreciates Caesarstone's extensive range of color options and its versatility. While primarily used for kitchen countertops in this project, she also noted its applicability in bathrooms for elements like shower benches and floating vanities.
Sarah's background in surface and product design informs her passion for material selection. She emphasizes that surface materials profoundly influence the 'feeling' of a space, creating subconscious emotional responses in occupants. She describes this as a phenomenon where the brain interprets textures and appearances, translating them into feelings of anxiety or happiness, even without direct physical contact. This principle is especially significant in functional areas like kitchens and bathrooms, where the intersection of aesthetics, cleanliness, and sanitation directly impacts well-being.
For Eden and Zan’s kitchen, Sarah aimed to create a space that was warm, modern, and inviting, aligning with her design philosophy of 'relaxed but edited' and Eden's preference for modern aesthetics with rustic touches. She sought to introduce an element of the unexpected while maintaining character. The chosen Caesarstone product, Calacatta Nuvo, fulfilled these criteria. This marble-inspired surface features elegant gray veining on a luminous white base, offering the visual appeal of traditional marble but with the enhanced practical benefits of quartz. Unlike natural marble, Calacatta Nuvo is resistant to cracks, scratches, and stains, providing the aesthetic advantages without the high-maintenance demands.
Eden expressed satisfaction with the Calacatta Nuvo, highlighting its durability, low-maintenance properties, and the subtle variations in its pattern. She particularly appreciated that it offered a dream-like experience in the kitchen, with no stains and effortless cleaning, a significant improvement over previous honed surfaces that required extensive upkeep. The material was also extended to the master bathroom, and Eden specifically complimented the look of the waterfall edge created with the Caesarstone surface, further underscoring the material's aesthetic and functional success in the renovation.
