Francis Nicdao’s thoughtful selection of cast bronze, prima alpaca and iridescent glass
Francis Nicdao, principal designer and chief creative officer at Pembrooke & Ives, shares a mood board inspired by his appreciation for traditional craftsmanship and expertly crafted, luxurious pieces. His upbringing in Pampanga, Philippines, a region known for its artisanal goods, instilled in him a value for handmade items. This influence is evident in his design philosophy, which prioritizes unique and meticulously created elements. Nicdao's mood board sets a textural foundation with hand-finished plaster, incorporating depth and dimension through various tactile weaves like abaca mats, embroidered linen, and chenille jacquard. He emphasizes a balanced approach to colors, textures, and scale, ensuring a holistic sensory engagement in his projects. Raw materials, including mica, walnut, and alpaca wool, are central to his flat lay, celebrating the transformation of simple elements into art.
Nicdao elaborates on the specific items that comprise his mood board. He includes a eucalyptus branch for its clean scent and aesthetic versatility. A custom drinking glass by John Pomp highlights the beauty of handblown glass and its inherent imperfections. For wall and furniture applications, an iced mica silver pearl finish sample by Barn in the City showcases the depth and luminosity of mica. Custom walnut samples with brass inlay from Silverlining represent bespoke furniture, combining wood marquetry with refined metalwork. A custom plaster finish by Fresco Decorative Arts underscores the designer's preference for unique, artist-touched wall finishes over conventional wallpapers. His personal eyewear, a Dayo eyeglass frame by Mykita, is featured for its lightweight and quirky design.
Textiles play a significant role in his selection, including custom embroidered linen by Lesage Intérieurs, admired for its couture-level embroidery and beadwork, ideal for drapery and decorative pillows. A woven mat and shade by FJ Hakimian, made from abaca, reflects Nicdao's pride in using materials from his native Philippines, valuing its natural and textural qualities for projects in locations like the Hamptons and Palm Beach. He also includes a Mountain men’s fragrance by Thomas Clipper, appreciating its organic composition and seasonal variety. Prima alpaca Suri fabric in taupe by Sandra Jordan is highlighted for its luxurious and soft texture.
Cast bronze finishes are a favorite at Pembrooke & Ives, represented by custom selections from artists Hervé Van Der Straeten and Achille Salvagni, known for their masterful use of the material. Phinda Ré fabric by Toyine is chosen for its rich texture and color array, complementing other textiles. Tiziano fabric in Lapis by Lauren Hwang New York, a jacquard weave with Italian chenille and subtle gold threads, offers a soft finish that pairs well with other textures. Anatolian grey marble and dark bronze finishes by Chesneys are included for their handsome and warm character, versatile for various interior styles, particularly for mantels in the Pembrooke & Ives collection. Finally, custom embroidered linen by Atelier Moderne showcases the luxury of creating bespoke fabrics, from yarn selection to refining weave and texture, for truly one-of-a-kind textiles.
