Charlestown home built on family foundation
Colleen and Chris McKain, owners of McKain Builders and authors of “It’s His Show,” have transformed their custom-built, 5-bed, 3-bath home in Charlestown, Indiana into a vibrant family haven. Their approach combines functionality with personal touches, showcasing a blend of colorful accessories and sentimental collectibles that reflect their journey. The home's evolution is a testament to family memories and an ongoing process of updating and personalizing their living space.
The kitchen is a central hub, featuring floating oak cabinetry that displays cherished collectibles. A large island with black granite counters is accented by bright yellow lemons in a glass canister, complementing the lighter granite counters along the kitchen's perimeter. A decorative tile backsplash with an intricate inlay adds texture and visual interest to the area.
The family room is designed for comfort and connection, anchored by a curved sectional adorned with colorful accent pillows. Built-in units serve as display spaces for family photographs, books, and a television, while an oversized ottoman, topped with a decorative tray, and wall ledges showcase sentimental items. The walls are lined with prints, further personalizing the space.
The dining room, set up for festive family meals, features a long table with brightly colored host/hostess chairs and additional accent chairs. A hutch nearby holds books and memorabilia, and an elaborate planter with thriving greenery serves as a centerpiece. A decorative panel inscribed with “Faith will see us through” adds a meaningful touch.
Beyond the interior, the home extends into a spacious outdoor living area, a focal point for family gatherings. Tables and chairs are arranged around a sparkling pool, ideal for al fresco dining. A pool house with bar chairs provides additional seating. The McKains particularly enjoy watching their grandchildren play on the swing set, a cherished item previously used by their own children, enhancing the home's connection to past and present family life. The property is embraced by a wooded landscape, offering a tranquil and private setting.
The master bedroom is a sanctuary designed for relaxation, featuring blue burlap drapes, colorful bedding, and bold accent pillows. A drum pendant light, suspended by a rope, illuminates the room, and a built-in dresser with decorative hardware hosts a television. The master bathroom seamlessly integrates with the bedroom, lacking separating walls to create an open and flowing space. It boasts a large walk-in shower with ornate tiles and a smooth rock inlay, complemented by pendants that brighten a chest with sophisticated hardware, where hooks display stylish jewelry. The home also includes two office spaces, ample bedrooms for grandchildren's impromptu sleepovers, and an open living area encompassing the kitchen, family room, and dining space, all contributing to its distinctive and functional character. Interior decorator Angie Maxwell assisted with the most recent redecoration, helping the McKains personalize the space as a tribute to their family.
