Filmmaker Gregory Caruso's 727-square-foot Craftsman cottage in Laguna Beach, a registered historical structure dating back to 1917, was recently transformed into a Zen-inspired weekend retreat. Husband-and-wife design duo Scott Jarrell and Kristan Cunningham of Hammer and Spear were tasked with the renovation. Having worked with Caruso on previous projects, the designers were given significant creative freedom after an initial concept presentation. Caruso's primary design inspiration was the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, interpreted through the lens of the 'Mad Men' series finale, which depicted a tranquil California retreat. While initial ideas for tapestries and tie-dye were toned down, the designers incorporated an "overdose of saturated color" to compensate and root the home in the region's artistic culture. The guiding touchstone for the design became the warm, woody California abode of sculptor J.B. Blunk, known for his Japanese-inspired aesthetic. Jarrell and Cunningham incorporated this ethos through elements like a vintage Noguchi lantern, a tatami mat in the sleeping nook, and antique Japanese wood boxes, all contributing to a sense of zen. The renovation emphasized tactful restraint, aiming to maintain original features and salvage existing materials. Swing doors in the hallway were refashioned into pocket doors, and the 105-year-old redwood walls were meticulously restored. The original Douglas fir flooring underwent sanding, staining, and sealing to bring it back to its new condition. The designers chose to keep material new finishes minimal to allow the redwood to dominate the visual narrative. Copper was introduced for new countertops, the kitchen sink and backsplash, and the bathroom countertop and tub deck, all hand-patinated by collaborator Derek Albeck of DDA Projects. The fireplace was adorned with teal handmade tiles, inspired by a puffed-edge Batchelder design. The cottage's classification as "Exceptional" by the Laguna Beach Historical Society presented unique challenges, particularly regarding exterior modifications. Gregory opted to defer exterior overhauls, meaning certain elements, such as the original windows and 1980s or 90s leaded glass panes flanking the fireplace, could not be made more efficient or removed. To address this, Jarrell and Cunningham ingeniously used paper shoji shutters as a workaround. Laguna Construction & Builder served as the contractor for the project. For Caruso, the cottage serves as a welcome escape from city life, suitable for small gatherings or hosting occasional overnight guests. The designers meticulously outfitted the entire home, from linens and bathroom essentials to kitchen gadgets and a vacuum, ensuring it was fully functional and ready for immediate use upon his first visit. Pemberton, a well-established manufacturer of holiday homes with over six decades of experience, has released its latest model, the two-bedroom Brompton static caravan. This 42ft x 13ft single unit is built on a pre-galvanized, twin-axle chassis and offers customers a choice of external cladding options including Canexel, vinyl, aluminum, and timber, all complemented by a pitched roof clad in pantile-effect Plastisol coated galvanized steel. Standard features enhance comfort and efficiency, including PVC-U double glazing, gas combi central heating with thermostatic radiator valves, and low-energy lighting. The Brompton provides three entry points: a front door opening into a hallway, French doors in the lounge's end wall, and a sliding patio door in the dining area. The lounge is furnished with a sofa bed and two armchairs, along with several display cabinets. A remote-controlled flame-effect electric fireplace is positioned on the home's front wall, with a TV point above it. The separation of the lounge from the kitchen and dining area by sliding doors creates a cozy atmosphere, while the vaulted ceiling, French doors, and window units in the end, front, and rear walls ensure a bright and airy living space. The L-shaped kitchen features a sink unit along the home’s back wall, with options for a compact dishwasher, washer dryer, or washing machine instead of standard cupboard storage. The kitchen also includes additional base units, a built-in oven, and a four-burner hob, topped with a curved glass fume extractor.
