Fake exposed brick with wallpaper – see this savvy homeowner's trick
This blog post details a homeowner's extensive DIY makeover of her hallway, staircase, and landing, focusing on her transition from brightly colored walls and carpeting to a more muted, industrial-inspired aesthetic. Hayley, the homeowner behind @diyingtoupcycle, initiated the project by removing a carpet she disliked, even resorting to taking it up while her partner was asleep, citing its poor appearance after only a few months. She also aimed to replace the vibrant teal, pink, and red paint in her downstairs hall, which no longer aligned with her evolving personal style.
The makeover involved significant painting, with Hayley opting for muted tones. She painted the walls, wooden trims, front door, and radiator. The staircase spindles were painted white, while other elements like skirtings and door trims were painted black, creating a monochrome look that complements the brick-effect wallpaper. For the stairs themselves, Hayley chose to sand and stain the original wood. She describes the underlying wood as gorgeous despite its initial poor condition, highlighting its stunning grain. The sanding process was labor-intensive, taking many hours, but resulted in a rustic appearance achieved with just two tins of varnish.
Moving to the landing, Hayley discovered OSB (Oriented Strand Board) instead of wooden floorboards. To remain budget-friendly, she decided to keep the OSB as the main flooring. This involved sanding it extensively, an eight-hour process that created considerable dust. After sanding, she applied the same stained varnish used on the stairs to the OSB, which transformed it to have an industrial, earthy, and rustic feel. She then complemented this with jute rugs from Penneys.
Downstairs, the walls received a fresh, antique cream paint, and doors were painted in an earthy browny/beige with black frames. A unique feature introduced was the “Pooch Pad,” an under-stairs dog house painted with leftover fence paint. The article emphasizes the successful application of brick-effect wallpaper on one wall of the landing, which Hayley says significantly enhanced the area. She further decorated the space with numerous plants, a mix of real and faux hanging ones, and upcycled mirrors, completing the industrial and earthy aesthetic of the renovated space.
