5 small space homes that use unique partition designs to demarcate a chic foyer
First impressions are crucial, especially when it comes to a home's entrance. The foyer plays a significant role in setting the tone for any abode, but designing one in small apartments can be challenging due to limited space. This article explores five ingenious partition designs from the archives of AD India that effectively maximize space and create stylish foyers in compact homes, demonstrating how clever design can introduce a 'pause in the spatial narrative'.
One example is a 900-square-foot Mumbai home, reconceived by interior designer Dhvani Shah. To address the owners' desire for a larger, airier, and more spacious apartment with ample storage, Shah strategically manipulated the existing layout. A key intervention was replacing a kitchen wall with an attractive arched partition crafted from black metal and a combination of clear and fluted glass. This not only visually expanded the space and enhanced brightness but also cleverly separated the kitchen from the living-dining area. Adjacent to this, the dining area is delineated from the entrance foyer by a shoe rack featuring a black metal and cane-finished screen. The overall sense of expanse was further amplified by increasing the height of all room doors.
Another innovative approach is seen in an 800-square-foot Mumbai apartment designed by architect Priyank Mehta of Studio PM. This home emphasizes mental quietude and a clutter-free environment, drawing inspiration from Japandi and wabi-sabi styles with modern elements. The design incorporates two curved walls at the entrance. The first wall gracefully unfurls near the main door, providing both a screening effect for privacy and integrated storage for footwear. The second curved wall, positioned opposite the first, subtly guides the eye into the home's interiors. This interplay of curved volumes creates a visually striking and functional entryway, optimizing circulation and storage within the compact space.
The 'Project Grey Wash' in a 1,200-square-foot Mumbai apartment, designed by Avneesh Tiwari and Neha Rane of atArchitecture, showcases a minimalist aesthetic with a strong emphasis on functionality. The entrance vestibule is designed to create a distinct sense of arrival and transition. It features a semi-open unit composed of playfully arranged teak cube shells. This unit serves as both a stylish room divider and a strategic element to obscure a direct view into the living room, which is situated immediately beyond the entrance. This design choice effectively defines the foyer while maintaining an open yet private feel.
In another 1,200-square-foot Mumbai home, principal architect Akshaya Mestry of Studio Mestry successfully blended antique ancestral furniture with modern sensibilities. Two former flats were combined to create a larger 3BHK from a 4BHK, allowing for more spacious rooms and an open living area. At the entrance, a wood and cane partition featuring arched motifs, designed in a contemporary style, segregates the two original apartments. This partition creates a momentary pause, effectively carving out a distinct foyer space while harmoniously integrating with the home's blend of old and new elements and various textures.
Finally, a 1,200-square-foot Ahmedabad home by NSAD Studio, designed by Nachiket Shelat and Nishita Kedia, reflects the young couple's distinctive personalities, desiring a calming and serene environment with ample storage and a touch of whimsy. The foyer in this 3BHK home is designed to be inviting, featuring double doors that offer both ventilation and privacy. The interiors are characterized by playful design elements, soothing hues, and eclectic finishes, including an interplay of spherical accents and whimsical patterns that contribute to the overall vivid character of the space. These examples demonstrate that creative partition designs are essential for defining functional and aesthetically pleasing foyers in small homes, transforming limited spaces into impactful entryways.
