Giving Your Deck a New Life Doesn’t Have to be a Chore Thanks to This Product
Outdoor decks serve as popular spaces for entertainment and relaxation, but their exposure to the elements inevitably leads to dirt and grime accumulation, making them appear dull and drab. Annual cleaning, preferably in spring or early summer, followed by a sealer application, is recommended to maintain a deck's appearance and protect it from weather damage. With numerous deck cleaning products available, selecting the most effective one can be challenging. This article details a hands-on testing process for several top-selling deck cleaners to evaluate their performance on actual decking boards stained with dried mud and grease splatters.
The testing revealed that some highly anticipated products did not meet expectations. The Star Brite Non-Skid Deck Cleaner & Protectant emerged as the best overall choice due to its ease of use, effectiveness, and affordability. This cleaner is particularly suitable for painted and composite decks, utilizing non-caustic chelating detergents to remove spills and dirt without requiring scrubbing. Its application involves wetting the surface, applying the full-strength solution, allowing it to sit, wiping, and rinsing. Although it claims to leave a non-skid polymer coating, this benefit was not significantly discernible during testing; however, its cleaning power on painted surfaces without causing damage was noteworthy. A single gallon can clean up to 1,000 square feet.
For pre-staining preparation, Defy Wood Brightener Liquid Concentrate was identified as an effective option for weathered wood decks. It removes light dirt, rust stains, and dark tannin stains, lightening the wood to ensure even stain absorption. The product is diluted at a 1:4 ratio with water and applied with a deck brush, then rinsed after 5 minutes. While effective at brightening, it may raise the wood grain, making the surface slightly rough, which might necessitate sanding before staining and sealing. One gallon treats up to 1,000 square feet.
Karcher Pressure Washer Multi-Purpose Cleaning Soap was highlighted as the best choice for pressure washer applications. This versatile formula is suitable for wood, masonry, metal, vinyl, and automobile exteriors, quickly breaking down and dissolving stains. It can be used full-strength in a pressure washer dispenser or diluted for brush application. While highly effective, it contains powerful ingredients that can cause skin irritation, recommending protective clothing during use. The product yields 20 gallons of cleaning solution.
Wet & Forget Moss, Mold, Mildew & Algae Stain Remover proved to be the best for tackling mold and mildew. This no-scrub, no-rinse concentrate dilutes at a 1:5 ratio and can be applied with a pump-type garden sprayer. It works by killing mold and lightening associated stains, making it ideal for moist environments. One gallon treats up to 2,250 square feet. Users are advised to wet nearby foliage to prevent potential harm.
Oil Eater Original Cleaner & Degreaser excelled at removing oil and grease stains from various surfaces, including wood, concrete, bricks, and metal. Its flexible dilution ratios, ranging from 1:1 for tough stains to 1:20 for milder ones, allow for customized application. It can be brushed on or used in a power washer. While effective, older stains might require a second application and scrubbing.
Simple Green Oxy Solve Total Outdoor Cleaner was recognized as the best eco-friendly option. Awarded the EPA’s “Safer Choice,” this nontoxic concentrate is effective on wood decking, masonry, and siding, removing dirt and stains without harming plants or grass. It can be used with a power washer or diluted for brush application. A gallon treats up to 6,400 square feet. Despite its effectiveness, the tester found its smell to be disagreeable.
Other products, such as Citra-Shield, were tested but did not perform adequately, failing to remove algae stains as claimed. The article emphasizes that deck cleaners improve appearance and prolong life, especially by addressing mold and mildew, and are crucial before staining or sealing. Key considerations when choosing a deck cleaner include the type of decking material, the specific grime to be removed, the application method, coverage area, and safety precautions, particularly with pressure washers and chemical exposure. It also addresses common questions regarding wood deck cleaning, pressure washing before staining, and alternative cleaning methods without a pressure washer.
