My Basement Flooded…What I Wish We’d Have Known to Better Prepare, and What We Learned

The author recounts an unexpected flash flood incident in their Colorado home, an area typically prone to drought. During a severe summer storm, record rainfall led to a large light well, serving two basement bedrooms, filling with nearly a foot of water. This water rapidly seeped through the windows, causing extensive saturation of windowsills, walls, and carpeting in both rooms. The immediate response involved bailing water from the light well using fishing waders and a bucket, while simultaneously deploying all available towels to absorb water from the windowsills and carpet. To combat further damage, the author used a hairdryer on wet wood and drywall, and continuously cycled towels through the washer and dryer for hours to extract as much moisture as possible from the carpet. The following morning, a thorough inspection revealed that the home's roofline, combined with a small accumulation of debris in the gutters, had created a 'perfect storm' scenario for the flooding. This experience highlighted the critical importance of regular gutter maintenance, despite the roof's unchangeable construction. To prevent mold and mildew, a dehumidifier and an industrial fan were immediately put into continuous operation for four days, with ongoing towel blotting to absorb residual moisture. The author notes that homeowner's insurance typically does not cover flood damage, but fortunately, the damage sustained was minimal enough to be handled without professional intervention. The combination of the dehumidifier and industrial fan proved highly effective in thoroughly drying the carpet and its pad, averting the need for costly replacements. In the aftermath, the homeowners invested in additional towels to ensure preparedness for future incidents and purchased a water pump for the light well to automate water removal, replacing the arduous manual bailing process. The incident served as a crucial learning experience, emphasizing the need for vigilance, particularly in monitoring window wells during heavy rainfall, and reinforcing the importance of consistent gutter cleaning. Although the flood could have resulted in much more severe damage, timely intervention and the implementation of drying measures prevented major structural or material loss. The article underscores that while some factors like roof design are fixed, proactive maintenance and having appropriate tools on hand can significantly mitigate the impact of unforeseen natural events. #BasementFlooding #WaterDamage #HomeMaintenance #FloodPreparedness #GutterMaintenance #DIYFloodControl #HomeSafety #EmergencyResponse #BasementFlooding #WaterDamage #HomeMaintenance #FloodPreparedness #GutterMaintenance #DIYFloodControl #HomeSafety #EmergencyResponse
