An Adventurer and Her Pets Find Solace in a Renovated 1973 Airstream Tradewind
This article details the comprehensive renovation of a 1973 Airstream Tradewind by Innovative Spaces for a solo adventurer and her pets. The project began with the firm sourcing a vintage Airstream through their network of "Airstream pickers." Despite the exterior being in good condition, the interior was described as "pretty funky," necessitating a complete overhaul. The renovation involved a "shell-off restoration," a critical process where the entire trailer is gutted, and the shell is lifted from the chassis to ensure a solid foundation. This step is crucial for addressing potential rust, bending, and wear and tear on the steel chassis, ensuring the trailer's longevity for another five decades of road use.
The chassis was entirely rebuilt using aluminum to enhance strength and reduce weight. Following this, the subfloor systems, including grey and black water tanks, wiring, plumbing, and fiberboard, were installed. The shell was then reattached, and spray foam insulation, along with new aluminum interior skins, was added. Approximately 90% of the Airstream underwent an overhaul, with the interior layout completely reconfigured to meet the client's specific needs.
The client requested an open-concept space featuring a well-appointed kitchen for cooking, a spa-like bathroom, and off-grid compatibility for her adventures. Innovative Spaces utilized 3-D CAD programs to design the Airstream, allowing the client to visualize the space and make adjustments before construction. The 165-square-foot interior now includes a luxurious bathroom, a work desk, a bedroom, an office, a closet, and a kitchen with a breakfast nook. Thoughtful additions for the pets include built-in dog and cat beds, and a central vacuum system simplifies cleanup.
The design philosophy centered on multi-use spaces with ample ground-level storage and an airy, open feel, achieved by keeping headroom areas uncluttered. Interior designer Lauren Ravenhill of LF Design Studio collaborated with the client to select unique and timeless finishes. Kahrs maple flooring provides a warm base, while comfortable leather cushions are chosen for durability and improved aesthetics with wear. A maple tabletop and shelves complement the flooring, anchoring the spaces.
The kitchen, designed for a keen cook, features custom-built shaker-style cabinets made from ultralight plywood, topped with Glacier White Corian countertops. It is equipped with a custom wine rack, a deep sink, a double-burner stove, and a Smeg microwave. The spa-like wet bath is fully waterproofed, clad in whitewashed cedar, and includes Glacier White Corian countertops, teak flooring, and a bench. A see-through panel with a floral motif allows natural light while ensuring privacy. An external feature is a lightweight aluminum drop-down deck off the kitchen, which extends the living space and can support up to 1,500 pounds, operated by a push-button mechanism. A mosquito net awning offers protection from the elements, completing the mobile home's functional and aesthetic transformation.
