Former WSB-TV news anchor’s home in Big Canoe honors nature
The home of retired WSB-TV news anchor John Pruitt and his wife, Andrea, in Big Canoe, is a testament to their love for nature and the region's wildlife. The house, built in 1986 and purchased by the Pruitts in 2003, is decorated with bear-themed artwork, sculptures, and stuffed animals, reflecting the presence of bears on the property since its construction. Andrea Pruitt recalls seeing bears and deer on the street when she first visited the property, describing the scene as magical.
The three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath home spans 3,800 square feet and is designed in a rustic mountain architectural style. Upon purchasing the home, the Pruitts embarked on a series of renovations to personalize the space and enhance its connection to the natural surroundings. One significant alteration involved expanding the two levels of decks that nearly encircle the house, providing ample outdoor living space and opportunities to enjoy the mountain views. They also added a screen porch, creating a sheltered area for relaxation.
Inside, the renovation efforts focused on updating the home's aesthetics and functionality while preserving its rustic charm. The great room's fireplace, which originally featured rough-hewn stone and a massive mantel, was maintained as a focal point. Vaulted cedar ceilings with architectural corbels were added, and built-in bookcases were refinished. The Pruitts also replaced the original pine flooring with new pine boards, installed chocolate-colored kitchen cabinets, and updated light fixtures throughout the house. A notable addition was a spiral staircase and a great room fireplace mantel crafted from an old pine plant pole sourced from Pennsylvania, further emphasizing the rustic and natural theme.
The home’s interior design also incorporates meaningful pieces, such as an antler chandelier that was already present when they bought the house. Andrea Pruitt’s favorite antique is a 20th-century chest of drawers with an antique turn-of-the-century vanity that belonged to her grandmother, who immigrated from Sweden to the U.S. This piece is now located in the powder bath. The art collection includes works by Peggy Watkins, Jack Mark, and Ann Eldrod, featuring designs from cartoonist Jack Mark and signed marketing strips by Watkins. A highlight of the outdoor features is the deck, which offers views of the mountains and Amicalola Falls.
The Pruitts share their home with their three golden retrievers: Cassie, Sandy, and Toby. They are often joined by their granddaughter, Sara Mundy, highlighting the home as a family-oriented retreat. Bruce Burkett was the contractor for the renovations, contributing to the realization of the Pruitts' vision for their mountain-style home.
