Entry Halls
This article showcases several entry hall design projects by different architects and designers, focusing on their approaches to transforming these transitional spaces. Daniel Contelmo Architects presents two distinct projects. The first involves a dining-room makeover in Chappaqua, which included installing new moldings and paneled wainscoting, refinishing floors, and replacing doors, windows, and furniture. An arch was added to frame the entrance to the living room, and the room was painted in neutral tones from Benjamin Moore's Historical Colors collection. The second project, also in Chappaqua, features a new home's entry that balances formal elements with graceful arches. A five-foot-wide staircase was strategically placed to avoid dominating the space, and custom-stained quarter-sawn white oak floors were used to add warmth.
Denise Wenacur of DW Design & Decor LLC details an entry hall transformation as part of an 18-month gut renovation of an 8,000-square-foot 'rambling ranch' with 23 rooms and nine baths in Rye. This project allowed for the creation of unique custom items, including a mahogany-inlaid front door crafted by a wood artisan in Colorado and a painted silver and gold-gilded entry dome housing a 150-pound chandelier made by a local faux painter. The architect for this extensive renovation was Tom O’Brien, and the general contractor was Colin Christiansen.
Katherine Stern Design's contribution focuses on an entryway in Briarcliff Manor. For this project, existing wall-to-wall carpeting was removed, and the wood floors and stairs were refinished. The risers, bannisters, and railing were painted with a custom gun-metal color. The chandelier was a pre-existing piece from the homeowner's collection. Stern also repurposed dining room chairs, which were originally an inexpensive set bought on eBay, by recovering them in a vibrant aqua velvet to complement the color scheme of the dining and living rooms. The article highlights how these designers approach entry halls not just as passage areas but as integral parts of a home's overall aesthetic and functional design.
