Two Kitchens Featuring Original Wood Beam Vaulted Ceilings
This article explores two distinct kitchen designs, both featuring vaulted ceilings with wood beams, yet achieving vastly different aesthetics and functionalities. The first kitchen, designed by Jill Litner Kaplan for a Weston estate, showcases a blend of historical architecture with modern elements. Kaplan faced the challenge of updating a historic home while preserving its original character. She integrated stainless steel appliances, custom blue crocodile leather stools, and oversized Italian mirrored pendants into the space. A key design decision involved retaining the original wood beams, which served both structural and aesthetic purposes. Despite discussions about potentially wrapping the beams, Kaplan chose to leave them in their rustic, patinaed state, creating a striking contrast with the sleek, contemporary finishes favored by the clients. This approach highlights a sophisticated interplay between old and new, celebrating the home's heritage while catering to modern living. The collaboration involved JW Construction as the builder and Jill Litner Kaplan Interiors for the interior design.
The second kitchen, located in an early 2000s home, was redesigned by Hannah Oravec, founder of Lawless Design. Oravec's clients initially had existing beams that were visually heavy and made the ceiling feel lower. Oravec's solution involved removing these bulky beams and installing new live-edge wood beams that followed the ceiling's natural line. This strategic change significantly opened up the room, emphasizing the impressive 16-foot ceilings. A notable feature of this redesign was the original arched window, which Oravec had painted black to enhance contrast and frame the view. To further accentuate the room's scale and introduce light without obstructing the window, brass globe Rejuvenation pendants were hung. These design choices collectively transformed the space, making it feel more expansive and modern while highlighting its architectural strengths. The project was executed with American Built Construction as the builder, Vartanian Custom Cabinets as the cabinetmaker, and Lawless Design handling the interior design. Both projects demonstrate how thoughtful design can transform kitchens, either by harmoniously blending historical elements with modern tastes or by cleverly reconfiguring existing structures to enhance space and light.
