Zzzigurat doorknob by Sans-Arc Studio for Bankston Architectural
The Zzzigurat doorknob, a collaborative creation by Australian architecture practice Sans-Arc Studio and brand Bankston Architectural, redefines conventional door hardware with its distinctive design. Launched as part of the Dezeen Showroom, this doorknob deviates from the typical smooth spherical form, instead featuring a stepped, characterful shape inspired by ancient Mesopotamian Ziggurat towers. This unique architectural influence imbues the functional object with an innovative and engaging sculptural quality, transforming a mundane fixture into a design statement.
Bankston Architectural positions the Zzzigurat doorknob as more than just a functional item, emphasizing its artistic and innovative aspects. Despite its modern and sculptural appearance, the product is designed to integrate seamlessly with a diverse range of interior styles, making it a versatile choice for various design aesthetics. This adaptability is a key consideration for both designers and homeowners seeking to blend contemporary elements with existing decor or establish a new, cohesive look.
Sans-Arc Studio's design process for the Zzzigurat doorknob drew significant inspiration from the Italian Radical Design Movement. Director Matiya Marovich highlighted the rebellious, sculptural, and playful style characteristic of this period, noting its long-standing influence on their firm's design philosophy. This influence is evident in the doorknob's bold, geometric form, which challenges traditional notions of utility and ornamentation in hardware design. The Radical Design Movement, known for its experimental and often provocative approach to design, pushed boundaries and questioned conventional aesthetics, a spirit reflected in the Zzzigurat doorknob's unconventional silhouette.
Crafted from solid forged brass, the Zzzigurat doorknob is built for durability and a premium tactile experience. It is offered in a selection of six distinct finishes, allowing for further customization and integration into specific design schemes. These finishes range from classic polished chrome and smooth nickel platings to more contemporary options like semi-gloss Nero and Neutralis powder coats, and an elegant Champagne PVD coating. This variety ensures that the doorknob can serve as either a subtle accent or a prominent design feature, depending on the chosen finish and the overall interior palette.
With dimensions of 69 x 77 x 205 millimeters, the doorknob provides a substantial and ergonomic grip, combining form with functionality. The attention to material, finish, and the deliberate conceptual inspiration underscores a product that aims to elevate the often-overlooked details of interior spaces, transforming them into points of interest and artistic expression. The Zzzigurat doorknob represents a fusion of historical architectural inspiration with modern design sensibilities, offering a piece of hardware that is both a practical necessity and a piece of art.
