This Relaxing Garden Trend is Going to Rule 2025, According to a Garden Expert

This article explores the rising popularity of Mediterranean gardens and offers practical advice on how to achieve this aesthetic in an outdoor space. The trend, which has seen a significant increase in online searches and Pinterest activity, focuses on creating a relaxing, vacation-like atmosphere reminiscent of Greek destinations such as Santorini or Mykonos. Chloe Barrow, an interior expert at home and garden retailer Laura James, provides key insights and actionable tips for transforming a garden into a Mediterranean oasis without extensive renovations or high costs. The first step in creating a Mediterranean garden involves switching out traditional garden decor. Barrow suggests replacing common items like rattan furnishings and wood slat privacy screens with elements that reflect Grecian styles. This includes incorporating rope furniture and detailing, whitewashed concrete benches, and simple side tables. For existing wooden furniture, a cost-effective method involves sanding them to expose the natural wood texture and then applying weather-resistant white paint. This technique not only saves money but also emulates the weathered, historical look frequently observed in Southern European settings. Decorating with a Mediterranean color palette is crucial for establishing the desired ambiance. Barrow recommends using finishing touches such as cushion covers, throw blankets, pillows, and coasters in shades of terracotta and cobalt blue. These colors are chosen to enhance the visual appeal of whitewashed furniture, providing vibrancy without being overwhelming. Opting for new accessories rather than entirely new outdoor furniture sets is presented as a budget-friendly way to introduce the Mediterranean vibe. Additionally, the article advises using yellow-toned lighting instead of white to simulate natural sunlight, creating a dramatic, sun-drenched glow in the garden. Integrating Mediterranean plants is another essential component of this garden style. Plants like Bougainvillea, olive trees, rosemary, and palms are highlighted for their ability to instantly impart a Mediterranean feel. Barrow points out that these plants add height and dimension, contributing to a vacation atmosphere while requiring minimal upkeep, making them suitable long-term investments. For potted plants, the use of terracotta pots is recommended to add texture and a distinctive orange hue, further layering the outdoor setting and reflecting the natural aesthetic of the Mediterranean region. Finally, the article emphasizes the importance of furniture that promotes relaxation. The Mediterranean lifestyle is characterized by comfort, a slower pace, and extended enjoyment of outdoor spaces. To reflect this, seating should encourage lounging and unwinding, with suggestions for chaise lounges, recliners, and comfortable ottomans. This type of seating is believed to physically and psychologically encourage longer periods of relaxation. To provide refuge from the sun, Barrow suggests adding parasols to existing loungers, a simple and budget-friendly addition that helps define designated lounging areas and enhances the overall Mediterranean experience, allowing individuals to embrace the concept of 'la dolce vita' in their own backyards. #MediterraneanGarden #OutdoorDecor #GardenDesign #HomeImprovement #WhitewashedFurniture #TerracottaPots #CobaltBlueAccents #Relaxation #GardeningTips #MediterraneanGarden #OutdoorDecor #GardenDesign #HomeImprovement #WhitewashedFurniture #TerracottaPots #CobaltBlueAccents #Relaxation #GardeningTips
