Tape—Not Paint—Transformed This London Kitchen Into an Italy-Inspired Paradise

This blog post highlights a unique and budget-friendly kitchen transformation in London, inspired by the vibrant aesthetic of Hotel Il Pellicano on the Tuscan seaside. Antiques dealer Dorian Caffot de Fawes and interior designer Thomas Daviet, a couple who vacation in Tuscany annually, sought to bring the cheerful Mediterranean vibe to their London home. Their solution, detailed in Sophie Donelson’s book "Uncommon Kitchens," involved using painter’s tape to create bright yellow stripes on their kitchen cabinets. The inspiration for the yellow stripes came directly from the towels and cabana umbrellas at Hotel Il Pellicano, which provided a much-needed splash of sunshine to their London dwelling. The couple utilized affordable IKEA base units as the foundation for their design, further emphasizing the cost-effectiveness of their approach. A key advantage of using painter's tape instead of paint is its durability and reversibility, allowing for easy changes or removal of the design as desired. The authors provide practical advice for readers looking to replicate this DIY project. They emphasize the importance of choosing a color that evokes the desired mood, noting that their yellow selection was a deliberate choice to combat London’s often gray weather with a cheerful, sunny ambiance. They also suggest going for vertical stripes, which they found to be more calming than horizontal "racer stripes," despite the immediate eye-catching nature of the bright hue. Another crucial tip involves matching the tile and stripe width for a cohesive look. The couple extended this principle by running the ceramic backsplash tile vertically, creating a harmonious and unified visual line with the striped cabinets. This attention to detail ensures that the mixed materials appear as a single, deliberate design element. Maintenance of this unique kitchen design is described as straightforward. The painter's tape is generally long-lasting, and in areas prone to more wear and tear, individual strips can be easily peeled off and reapplied. Keeping spare rolls of tape on hand is recommended for quick touch-ups or changes. This method offers a flexible and low-commitment way to infuse personality and color into a kitchen space, proving that a significant design impact doesn't always require extensive renovations or high costs. #KitchenDesign #DIYHomeDecor #PainterTape #KitchenCabinets #InteriorDesign #MediterraneanStyle #BudgetFriendly #HomeRenovation #LondonHomes #KitchenDesign #DIYHomeDecor #PainterTape #KitchenCabinets #InteriorDesign #MediterraneanStyle #BudgetFriendly #HomeRenovation #LondonHomes
