How to secure furniture to a wall – 4 steps for peace of mind
Securing furniture to a wall is a critical safety measure that extends beyond households with children or pets, addressing the constant risk of heavy storage units, shelving, and media units toppling over. Such incidents lead to thousands of injuries annually in the US, highlighting the necessity of proper furniture anchoring. This DIY project is simple to execute and crucial for preventing potential harm and damage.
The first step involves selecting the appropriate anchor type. For large and heavy items like bookshelves or media consoles, L-shaped brackets are recommended. Smaller items such as dressers and cabinets are best secured with furniture straps. Many furniture pieces come with these anchoring kits or recommendations in their manuals. These anchors should be screwed directly into wall studs for maximum security.
Locating wall studs is the second essential step. Similar to hanging heavy mirrors or artwork, identifying wall studs ensures that furniture is secured to the strongest structural points of the wall, significantly reducing the likelihood of the anchor being pulled out. A stud finder simplifies this process.
The third step involves carefully positioning the furniture and attaching the anchors. Before securing, ensure the furniture is correctly aligned. Manufacturer instructions should be followed for attaching anchors to both the furniture and the wall, which may include drilling pilot holes. The number of anchor points depends on the furniture's size and weight. For most items, at least two three-inch screws at the top suffice, but items over four feet tall benefit from additional anchors in the middle. Careful consideration of screw length is necessary to avoid damaging electrical wiring or plumbing behind the wall.
Finally, for media units or TV stands, proper cord management is integral to the mounting process. It is best handled during installation rather than afterward to effectively organize cables behind the TV. A mounting system safely secured into studs and a cable tube to contain power cords are recommended. While adhesive anchors, furniture straps, or weighted bases can secure furniture without drilling, these methods are generally less secure than drilling into a wall stud. If drilling into a stud isn't possible for plasterboard walls, heavy-duty plasterboard fixings and appropriate screws should be used to distribute the item's weight and prevent the furniture from pulling away from the wall. Once furniture is secured, a final cleaning to remove dust and debris with a HEPA-filtered vacuum and a damp microfiber cloth is advised before repositioning belongings.
