5 Times Interior Designers Used Colorful Tile Grout That Make Me Never Want to Choose White Again

The article explores the growing trend of utilizing colorful tile grout as a significant design element in modern interiors, moving beyond its traditional functional role. DeeDee Gundberg, chief designer at Ann Sacks, highlights that grout can either seamlessly integrate with a design through tonal colors or create a bold statement with contrasting hues. The piece presents five instances where designers have effectively used colorful grout in bathrooms and kitchens, challenging the conventional preference for white grout. The first example showcases a mid-century modern kitchen designed by Colleen Slack of Fox Interiors. Here, navy tile grout is employed to unify various blue elements within the space, such as the pantry cabinets and adjacent dining room paneling. Slack explains that the navy grout highlights the diamond tile pattern in the backsplash, providing a subtle yet cohesive pop of color that avoids overpowering the overall design. The second instance features a bathroom by notooSTUDIO, which uses tonal combinations of pink tiles and orange grout to achieve a playful, retro aesthetic reminiscent of 1970s style. Chiara Luzzatto, Art Director and Architect at notooSTUDIO, notes that this color contrast extends to the ceiling, emphasizing that white plaster would have diminished the character of the space. The third illustration demonstrates the use of bright blue grout in a kitchen designed by Mandy Riggar. This approach creates a modern and playful look without relying on overwhelming patterned tiles or wallpaper. Riggar explains that the blue grout accentuates the pattern of simple white tiles, adding a 'just enough pop of fun' moment that complements the neutral design and draws inspiration from a vintage rug. For the fourth example, And And And Studio's bathroom design utilizes matching yellow tile grout and a painted ceiling to create a continuous and calming 'marigold-drenched' effect. Annie Ritz, Principal Designer at And And And Studio, describes how a custom grout color was developed to match the upper wall and ceiling, creating an illusion of continuity and depth within the space. Finally, the article suggests black grout as an option for those seeking contrast without venturing into vibrant colors. In a design by Ann Sacks, black grout is paired with white tiles and softened by peach walls, resulting in a clean yet relaxing aesthetic. DeeDee Gundberg points out that black and white grout combinations are classic and timeless, and encourages experimenting with patterns like herringbone or basketweave to further accentuate the grout's impact, advising a sample test before final installation, especially for smaller tiles where grout plays a more prominent role. #ColorfulGrout #TileDesign #InteriorDesignTrends #BathroomDesign #KitchenDesign #HomeDecor #DesignElements #RetroDesign #ModernInteriors #ColorfulGrout #TileDesign #InteriorDesignTrends #BathroomDesign #KitchenDesign #HomeDecor #DesignElements #RetroDesign #ModernInteriors
