Funky Marble and Rattan Lighting Shook Up This Builder-Grade Austin Kitchen
Vintage seller Tazeen Noor and her partner decided to move from their small East Village one-bedroom to Austin, Texas, during the pandemic. They found a house on the city limits that, while over budget, offered abundant south-facing light, a crucial feature for Noor, who is a plant enthusiast. This move presented Noor with the opportunity to personalize a home with significant square footage, a luxury she hadn't experienced since owning property in Philadelphia. Her primary goal was to transform the builder-grade space into an inviting and personalized environment.
The kitchen and adjacent dining room, initially cookie-cutter, were prioritized for renovation. Noor, who frequently cooks, wanted to eliminate the isolation felt while entertaining guests. This led to a significant structural change: tearing out the floors, a wall of cabinets, and the existing narrow island to open the space to the living room, fostering a more connected atmosphere. This change improved the flow and integration of the kitchen with the main living area, reflecting her desire for a social cooking environment.
To address storage needs after removing upper cabinets, Noor extended the depth of the garden-style window frame above the sink to 28 inches. This modification not only allowed for increased natural light but also provided a dedicated spot for her dwarf Ming aralia tree. Furthermore, by knocking through an old dry storage pantry and extending the back wall of lower cabinets, she created ample space to store all her small appliances, ensuring functionality without sacrificing her design vision.
A focal point of the renovated kitchen is the locally sourced Calacatta Viola marble used for the countertops and backsplash. This material, characterized by its distinctive burgundy and gray veining, was a significant investment and a bold design choice. Noor was drawn to its dynamic movement, describing it as a "snapshot in time with what was going on in the stone," highlighting her appreciation for its unique aesthetic and natural artistry.
To balance the dramatic marble, Noor incorporated elements that ground the space while reflecting her eclectic yet minimalist style. A maroon zellige tile on the back of the island echoes the marble's hues, and brass footing along the cabinets adds a touch of elegance. The dining area further enhances this balance with an abundance of greenery and natural textures. Vintage rattan lighting and high-back bamboo dining chairs, sourced from a local seller, contribute to an organic, inviting ambiance. Noor envisions the revamped space as a versatile hub for various activities, including community gatherings, business meetings, and family meals, emphasizing its role as both a sanctuary and a source of inspiration.
