Kitchen footprint to grow

The kitchen continues to be a central and highly functional space within homes, and its physical size is projected to expand over the next three years, according to the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s (NKBA) 2026 Kitchen Trends Report. A survey conducted by the NKBA, involving industry experts across North America, indicates that popular methods for achieving this increased space include physically enlarging the kitchen footprint, eliminating formal dining areas, reallocating space from adjacent living rooms, and adopting open-concept layouts by removing walls. To further reduce visual clutter and enhance the perception of spaciousness, there is a trend toward concealing workspaces, appliances, and food preparation zones behind walls and doors. Future kitchens are expected to prominently feature dedicated beverage areas, integrated mudrooms, pet feeding stations, and eat-in dining options. In terms of aesthetics, neutral color palettes remain dominant, with 96% of respondents identifying them as the most popular choice, followed closely by greens and blues. Less favored are vibrant colors such as millennial pink, bright orange, and bright red. Statement colors will primarily be incorporated through backsplashes, wallpaper, island accents, and decorative accessories. Natural materials are also gaining prominence in kitchen design, with wood grain surpassing painted cabinets in popularity, favored by 59% of survey participants. White oak is the most popular wood type at 51%. For countertops, natural quartzite is a strong contender, close behind quartz, with 62% for countertops and 61% for backsplashes. Wood flooring is the top choice for 94% of respondents. Transitional and timeless styles lead kitchen design preferences, followed by contemporary/modern/minimalism, organic/natural, and mid-century aesthetics. Kitchen islands are evolving into multi-purpose hubs that reflect personal style, serving not only for food preparation and dining but also for appliance storage and entertaining. Pantries are designed to be seamless, promoting organization and accessibility while minimizing clutter, with walk-in, butler, and built-in options all being popular. Cabinetry trends emphasize improved usability and customization to individual cooking and lifestyle needs. Demand will be high for wood grain and painted surfaces, floor-to-ceiling cabinets, and Modern European door styles. Two-toned and contrasting color cabinets with soft-close mechanisms and decorative hardware will be popular, alongside increased use of drawers, functional storage hardware, and integrated charging stations. White oak remains a favored choice for cabinets, though walnut is expected to grow in popularity. Countertops and backsplashes will see an increasing trend of extending countertop materials upwards to create a seamless, cohesive look. Homeowners prioritize sanitary and easy-to-clean surfaces, opting for non-porous, antibacterial, and antimicrobial materials. Quartz and quartzite, along with honed/matte finishes and lighter-colored counters, will be sought after. Countertops will feature traditional or waterfall edges, utilizing both engineered and natural materials. The mixing of backsplash materials, shapes, and finishes allows for personalized expression. The next three years will feature solid surface patterned backsplashes in warm neutrals and earth tones, with ceramic/porcelain tile, engineered quartz, and quartzite as common materials. Flooring choices prioritize durability, practicality, and minimal grout lines for easy cleaning. Engineered wood and luxury vinyl wood plank are expected to be top choices. Warm neutrals, lighter wood tones, and earthy colors will be popular, with large format and plank flooring being prevalent. In dishwashers, noise reduction and customizable wash settings are in demand, with homeowners seeking ultra-quiet models and a third rack. Paneled dishwashers that match cabinet facings and stainless steel finishes will dominate. Refrigerators are expected to offer flexibility, ample space, and features that support healthy eating and active lifestyles. Dedicated beverage cooling units are becoming a popular addition. French door refrigerators with extra drawers in matching panels or stainless steel will be sought after. Cooking appliances are seeing a preference for multifunctional options, such as ovens with air frying or steam cooking capabilities. Ease of use and efficiency are key considerations, along with technology supporting alternative cooking methods and safety. Both separate and combined oven and cooktop configurations will be in demand. Ventilation hoods are chosen for their power and quiet operation, effectively removing smoke, steam, and odors, and will be decorative yet functional, made from wood or stainless steel. For sinks, wide workstation models with multiple tiers will be popular, alongside a rising demand for single-bowl sinks. Stainless steel will be the most common sink material, followed by composite and porcelain, with stainless/nickel and white being the most popular sink colors. Faucet finishes are often matched with cabinetry hardware, with matte, brushed, and satin finishes being popular. Hands-free or manually controlled faucets in gold, black, and stainless steel will be fashionable. Kitchen lighting is evolving into a statement feature, with decorative elements and the mixing and matching of materials like metals, glass, and fabric becoming common. Fixtures will mainly be gold, earth tones, and black in matte and natural/wood finishes. Lighting is used to create different moods throughout the day, and WiFi-connected lighting is increasingly in demand.
