Home Tour: A 30s finance couple’s $30,000 Feng Shui renovation for their 3-bedroom condo in Tampines
This article showcases the $30,000 renovation of a 936 sq ft, 3-bedroom condominium in Tampines, owned by a couple in their early 30s working in the finance industry. The design, spearheaded by Gerry from DISTINCTidENTITY, was heavily influenced by Feng Shui principles and aimed for a modern luxury aesthetic with a touch of nature. The renovation focused on the living, dining, foyer, feature walls, master bedroom, and study areas, with one bedroom transformed into a yoga and exercise room. The bathrooms and kitchen were not part of this renovation, and the original developer-installed floor tiles were retained.
A key design element involved using a high-contrast color palette and varied textures, particularly natural materials like stone and wood. Neutral colors, ranging from light to dark, were strategically distributed throughout the home. Lighting was utilized to delineate spaces, such as transitioning from the lighter living room to the more intimate, darker-toned master bedroom corridor, which features dark mirrors and darker paint colors. The overall ambiance sought was earthy yet elegant, characterized by modern lines and custom-built features, aligning with the homeowners' preference for a sleek, classic, minimal, and timeless style that promotes calm and focus.
Functionality was a crucial consideration in furniture selection and layout. The living room, a favorite space for the homeowners, was the starting point of the design process. It features a brown leather sofa, artwork for a pop of color, and a stucco backstretch wall with a stone finish, complemented by recessed ceiling lighting for a moody and cozy atmosphere. The color scheme, rich in browns and neutrals, adheres to Feng Shui guidelines. A standout feature is the 3D-textured TV wall, designed to seamlessly integrate wine fridge coolers and a bar pantry. This wall, made of low-maintenance PU stone and flat laminate for the TV, aims to evoke a mountain-like, natural feel. The custom TV console is built from plywood and laminate, matching the materials and color scheme of the living and dining areas.
The dining area, adjacent to the living room and near the front door, includes a small wine cooler and a custom-built bar/dining table island. This island, featuring a durable sintered stone countertop and laminate base, was a clever solution by the interior designer to combine the homeowners' initial desire for a large dining table with their need for extra storage, offering a movable unit that seats eight and includes concealed storage for glassware and cutlery. A built-in bench opposite a compact bar pantry serves as both seating and shoe storage.
The master bedroom continues the theme of natural details with a custom headboard, side tables, and bedframe made from laminate. The walls are painted in a two-tone scheme: a darker taupe with black accents on the bottom half and a lighter grey (Great Fortress from Nippon Paint) on the upper half. An opposing wall mirrors the dark grey of the corridor (Stone Bench, also from Nippon), with LED mood lighting creating a calming environment. The study, functioning as a home office, features custom-built woodwork, including a desk large enough for two, oriented towards windows for natural light. The desk and a floating corner display for memorabilia are constructed from dark grey laminate and fluted WPC panels, providing a contrasting yet cohesive look with the living room while being easy to maintain. Curves were incorporated into shelves for safety and to soften the space.
The entire renovation process spanned approximately eight weeks. The homeowners lauded the collaborative effort with their interior designer, Gerry, acknowledging his ability to translate their vision and integrate their creative input with precision. They provided a simple palette of greys, browns, and off-whites, allowing the designer freedom to distribute colors and textures strategically to create the desired warmth and overall scheme for the home.
