The Chic Home: Creative couple’s dream BTO flat in Tampines
Theresia Lee, 39, a designer, photographer, and influencer, along with her husband Ardhian Satrya, 41, a digital experience designer, embarked on a journey to create their dream home in a 1,216 sq ft five-room Build-To-Order (BTO) flat in Tampines. With their professional design backgrounds, the couple took a hands-on approach, crafting their own design and layout before collaborating with Casa Interior Design to bring their vision to life. Their design philosophy centered on a modern minimalist aesthetic, prioritizing simplicity and versatility. This approach led them to select loose furniture over built-in fixtures, allowing for easy adaptation as their two sons, aged 12 and five, grow and their needs evolve.
The home predominantly features a neutral color palette, creating a serene and timeless atmosphere. However, strategic splashes of color are introduced in specific areas to add vibrancy and personality. For instance, the children’s playroom boasts a blue-painted accent wall, and the common bathroom incorporates a distinctive color scheme. Practical design solutions are also evident throughout the flat; the household shelter near the main entrance is cleverly disguised behind a built-in cabinet with glass doors, maintaining the minimalist aesthetic without compromising functionality. The living room is designed as a comfortable and inviting space, where natural light softly filters through day curtains, contributing to a dreamy ambiance. Wood accents from the television console and flooring complement the off-white tones of the three-seater sofa from Castlery, along with the side table and rug, creating a harmonious and cohesive look. A swivel armchair from Castlery, chosen for its strong character, adds a unique touch to the living area.
The dining area is anchored by a 2m-long dining table from Soul & Tables, crafted from natural, untreated oak. This table is not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, capable of seating up to eight people, making it ideal for entertaining guests. Ms. Lee's passion for cooking and baking necessitated a large kitchen island, a feature that presented a design challenge due to a central column in the kitchen. Through creative problem-solving and collaboration with Casa Interior Design, the column was integrated into the island's design, transforming it from an obstacle into a distinctive feature. The resulting kitchen island, measuring 2½m by 1½m, is ingeniously divided into two functional zones: one for casual breakfasts with bar stools and another dedicated to baking and food preparation.
Relaxation and tranquility were paramount in the design of the master bedroom. A warm color scheme promotes a calming atmosphere, allowing the couple to unwind. This personal sanctuary also houses two of Ms. Lee’s cherished possessions: a vintage Tutu floor lamp acquired from a thrift shop and her own painting titled “Hope.” The bathrooms each have distinct personalities; the master bathroom exudes classic elegance with white marble and gold accessories, while the common bathroom features a fresh and airy feel with a green subway tile accent wall, reflecting Ms. Lee’s favorite color. The renovation, which cost approximately $40,000 (excluding furniture), was completed in three months, and the family moved into their new home in June 2024. The couple credits their design knowledge for enabling them to achieve their dream home efficiently and within budget, with plans for future enhancements like a reading nook and a redesign of their older son's playroom as he enters his teenage years.
