Take A Tour Of Travel Journalist Hershey Gargash’s Feng Shui Home
The home of freelance travel journalist Hershey Gargash in Al Khawaneej, Dubai, is a meticulously crafted space that blends diverse styles with a keen focus on balance and harmony, guided by Tibetan Feng Shui principles. Completed after two years of construction, the seven-bedroom, two-storey villa is situated on a large family plot and was designed from a blank slate by Hershey and her husband, Yousuf. Its design prioritizes open spaces and high ceilings to facilitate the flow of energy, a core tenet of Feng Shui.
Hershey's inspiration for the home stems from her extensive travels, with artworks and objets d’art collected globally, each contributing to a personal narrative. The villa's layout features a Syrian-inspired courtyard, designed as a peaceful inner sanctum, with all rooms facing inner gardens. This design choice emphasizes sensory experiences, such as the sound of water and the scents of jasmine or lemons, creating a tranquil environment.
The application of Tibetan Feng Shui, guided by architect and Feng Shui master Anna Max, is central to the home's energy. Each side of the house corresponds to a different element—earth, water, air, and fire—each designed to promote specific energies like stability, clearing, and spaciousness. Throughout the home, various Feng Shui symbols and objects are strategically placed: Garuda pictures for warding off illness, Dorje symbols for good health, mandarin ducks and elephants to enhance relationships, the Evil Eye for protection, and amethyst crystals for calm and harmony.
Despite its contemporary architecture, characterized by layered ceilings, white walls, and stone floors, the house maintains a cozy atmosphere. Each room is tailored for different family activities, from a sunken lounge for movie nights to a 16-seat dining area for entertaining, featuring art by Lamya Gargash and Sheikha Lateefa bint Maktoum. A library provides a quiet space for reading, and an inner courtyard boasts a pool with custom furniture. The majlis, on the circular side of the house, serves as an elegant space for both social gatherings and prayer, adorned with a Desroch chandelier and art by Latvian artist Sandra Strele.
The home exhibits a playful blend of old and new, colorful and neutral, modern and traditional elements. Hershey describes her style as eclectic, embracing diverse rich textures and cultural influences from African, Middle Eastern, and Asian aesthetics. Notable features include evil eye vases at the entrance to trap negative energy, a custom-made chandelier with suspended silver pebbles symbolizing balance, and a second floor designed as a self-contained apartment for family life.
The children's bedrooms are vibrant and also incorporate Feng Shui principles, using specific colors and imagery to represent elements like water and earth. The playroom, designed by Nathalie Khouri of Ralee Designs, is a child's fantasy space. Hershey and Yousuf's bedroom offers a calm retreat with bespoke furnishings and an artwork of nine horses, reflecting the house's 'number nine' Feng Shui Kua number, which influences the home's energy pattern. Although recently occupied, the home continues to evolve, with plans for an outdoor majlis, a BBQ area, a firepit, and a terrace for community gatherings, embodying Hershey's desire for both personal serenity and social connection. The home stands as a vibrant testament to a globalized aesthetic, where cultural diversity and holistic harmony coalesce under the guiding principles of Feng Shui.
